Chapter 7 - THE PATTERN UNDER EVERY RESCUE

Derek’s former bookkeeper answered that question.
Her name was Simone Keller.
She left Mercer Restoration eight months earlier after repeated arguments over cash management.
Briarwood contacted her during its internal review.
With Derek’s loan now suspended, she agreed to provide records already lawfully available through the company’s prior accounting process.
The pattern was worse than Mariana expected.
Derek did not have one bad project.
He had built his company around rescue financing.
When a job ran over budget, he used deposits from new jobs.
When that created shortages, Lucille injected money.
When Lucille ran low, Derek borrowed against expected contracts.
Every new solution covered the previous one.
Simone had warned him.
“Slow down. Finish what you have.”
Derek refused.
He wanted growth.
A larger office.
More crews.
Bigger clients.
He believed one successful development would erase every earlier mistake.
Lucille believed him because she needed to.
Mariana found her name in Simone’s old email chain.
Not as an owner.
As a future resource.
Lucille had written:
Mariana will help if things become serious enough. She always does.
The email was fourteen months old.
Mariana leaned back from the screen.
That was the family pattern in one sentence.
Her competence had become collateral before her house ever did.
Every time she rescued them, she proved they could plan around the next rescue.
Rachel pointed to another email.
Derek:
She'll say no first. Mom can handle her.
Mariana read it several times.
The bridal-suite confrontation no longer looked like a moment when Lucille lost control.
It was the final step of a strategy.
Pressure Mariana emotionally.
Tie cooperation to family loyalty.
Use the wedding deadline.
Make saying no more painful than signing.
Ethan read the emails that evening.
“They knew you didn't want this.”
“Yes.”
“And planned around making you give in anyway.”
“Yes.”
He sat quietly.
Then said:
“This is the part I need you to understand.”
Mariana looked at him.
“If we get married, I can't spend our life watching them manufacture emergencies until you surrender.”
She wanted to defend herself.
Instead she remembered eighty thousand dollars she had stopped counting.
“You're right.”
Ethan took her hand.
“I’m not asking you to abandon them.”
“What are you asking?”
“To stop letting crisis make decisions for you.”
That night Mariana did something she had never done.
She blocked Derek’s number temporarily.
May you like
Not forever.
Long enough to think without being summoned.
