Chapter 11 - UNDERSTANDING HER DID NOT GIVE HER MAYA BACK

Evelyn requested mediation.
Not custody mediation.
She had no parental claim.
Family mediation.
She wanted access to Maya.
I said no.
For now.
David agreed.
Evelyn called him crying.
“I made a mistake.”
David answered:
“You dug a hole and made my daughter bury things from her mother.”
“I was trying to teach her—”
“No.”
Good.
He had finally learned the word.
Evelyn began therapy.
I did not make therapy a transaction.
Attend six sessions, receive granddaughter.
That would turn healing into another form of control.
Instead, we told her:
Do the work because you need it.
Maya’s relationship with you is a separate question.
She hated that.
“Then how do I prove I changed?”
David said:
“You don't get guaranteed proof.”
That sentence cost him.
For years he had managed his mother by promising eventual emotional repayment.
Later.
Maybe.
We’ll see.
Now he stopped.
The copied-signature documents were also addressed.
Rachel contacted the relevant school and medical offices.
No unauthorized custody change had been accepted.
No court had relied on the documents.
No property had moved.
No magical legal disaster.
But the conduct was documented.
Evelyn eventually admitted she assembled the packet using forms she found in David’s home office and scans of our signatures from other documents.
Her stated plan:
Present a “complete proposal” once David was ready.
She claimed she never intended to submit anything without permission.
Maybe.
The preschool authorization email drafts suggested she came uncomfortably close.
We took that seriously.
David removed her access to his home office.
Changed passwords.
Revoked informal permissions.
Again:
Not revenge.
Access following trust.
May you like
Trust gone.
Access changed.
