Chapter 10 - WHY EVELYN WAS TERRIFIED OF A MOTHER TAKING A CHILD AWAY
The deepest explanation came from David’s aunt, Susan.
Evelyn’s younger sister.
She called me after hearing about the pit.
“Claire, there’s something David probably doesn't know.”
He didn't.
When Evelyn was twenty-nine, she divorced David’s father.
The divorce was vicious.
David was six.
His older sister, Emily, was nine.
During the separation, Evelyn accepted a demanding job that required frequent travel.
David’s father used the schedule against her in custody negotiations.
Not maliciously, necessarily.
He argued the children needed consistency.

Evelyn saw Emily and David on weekends and Wednesdays.

Meals.
Homework.
