Chapter 1 - THE LITTLE BRASS KEY

My mother-in-law kicked dirt into the hole beside my four-year-old daughter and told her that by nightfall she would have a better mother.

I heard the last part.

That was enough.

“MAYA!”

I came through the back door so fast I nearly missed the patio step.

My daughter was standing at the bottom of a shallow landscaping pit in the backyard, dusty cream dress clinging to her knees, tears streaking her face.

Evelyn stood above her in a navy pantsuit.

Perfect silver pixie cut.

Gold earrings.

No panic.

No remorse.

“Stop calling her Mommy,” Evelyn said. “By tonight, you’ll have a better one.”

Maya reached for me.

“Mommy!”

I dropped to my knees and pulled her out.

She wrapped both arms around my neck so tightly I could barely breathe.

“What happened?”

Maya didn’t answer at first.

She opened one small fist.

A muddy brass key rested in her palm.

Then she pointed into the hole.

“She made me bury your things.”

My body went cold.

Not throw away.

Bury.

I set Maya safely behind me and scraped loose soil from a small cedar box.

Locked.

The key fit.

Inside were the hospital bracelets from the day Maya was born.

Mine.

Hers.

Three family photographs ripped through the middle.

A Mother’s Day card she had made me at preschool.

And a sealed legal packet.

I opened it.

My name appeared several times.

So did David’s.

My separated husband.

Maya’s father.

Then I saw signatures that looked like mine.

Except I had never signed those pages.

Evelyn lunged.

“Give me that.”

I pulled the box away.

She reached again.

This time I stood.

I slapped her once across the cheek.

Hard.

Her head snapped sideways.

I held the packet between us.

“You weren’t punishing her. You were erasing me.”

Something slipped from between the documents.

A photograph.

Maya stood beside a woman I didn’t recognize.

Dark blonde.

Early thirties.

One arm around my daughter’s shoulders.

Evelyn saw the picture.

And went pale.

“Who is she?”

No answer.

Behind me, Maya whispered:

“Grandma says I’m supposed to practice loving her.”

I turned.

“What?”

Maya’s lip trembled.

“She says Daddy needs me to.”

May you like

That was the moment I realized the hole in the backyard was not the beginning of anything.

It was the first time I had caught Evelyn in the middle of a plan she had already been carrying out for months.
