Chapter 8 - THE REPORT THAT ENDED MY MARRIAGE

I delivered the statement to Lakeview Bank, the Ohio Accountancy Board, and investigators reviewing possible loan fraud.

I also filed for divorce.

The decision was irreversible long before any judge signed an order.

Julian called from his attorney’s office.

The protection order prevented direct contact, but our lawyers arranged one conversation about medical insurance and the baby.

He began with the company.

“Can you withdraw the report?”

“No.”

“You don’t understand what the bank will do.”

“I understand exactly what the bank can do.”

“People will lose their homes.”

“You used money allocated to build those homes.”

“My father did.”

“You created Crescent.”

“That was a marketing company.”

“It paid for Chloe’s apartment.”

His breathing changed.

Then he said, “I was going to tell you about her after the refinance.”

“You punched me because I wouldn’t disappear on schedule.”

“I lost control.”

“You entered a baby shower with your mistress, insulted our daughter, and placed documents under the table before you lost control.”

Julian was silent.

I asked whether Chloe’s child was his.

He said yes.

“How do you know?”

“She says the dates match.”

That was the extent of his certainty.

He had called Chloe’s baby the real heir because his parents wanted a grandson. Chloe had told them she was carrying a boy. My daughter was treated as less valuable before she was born.

Julian did not ask about her health until eleven minutes into the call.

He asked whether the audit could be stopped three times.

That told me what remained most important to him.

After the call, Dana informed me that Arthur had offered a confidential financial settlement. The Winslows would pay my medical expenses, return my personal investment in the house, and create a trust for my daughter.

In exchange, I would describe the vendor discrepancies as internal accounting errors and state that the baby-shower documents were ordinary divorce papers.

The offer was large enough to protect my child for years.

It was also designed to keep every employee, lender, and homebuyer inside their lie.

I rejected it.

The next morning, Lakeview Bank froze all construction draws and requested a court-appointed receiver.
