Chapter 12 - WHAT EACH OF THEM CALLED LOVE

The confrontation took place in a supervised conference room six weeks after Evelyn came home.

Julian sat with his attorney.

Arthur and Beatrice sat across from him.

Chloe attended by video from her new apartment.

I sat beside Dana, with Evelyn’s photograph inside my folder.

Julian spoke first.

“Dad said Clara would sign if she understood she was being replaced.”

Arthur stared at him.

“You agreed.”

“I didn’t agree to take the blame for everything.”

Beatrice’s mouth tightened.

“This family gave you every advantage.”

“You gave me a job I could lose whenever I disappointed you.”

Arthur leaned forward.

“I spent thirty years building something for you.”

“You built it in your name.”

Chloe interrupted from the screen.

“You told me the condo money was guaranteed.”

Beatrice looked toward the monitor.

“You were compensated for your cooperation.”

“I was carrying your grandson.”

“You were carrying leverage.”

Chloe stopped speaking.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that Beatrice had never viewed her as family.

I asked Julian why he hit me.

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“You looked at me like I was already finished.”

“That’s why?”

“I had spent my whole life being told I would inherit everything if I proved I could control it. You were the only person in the room who could stop the refinance.”

“So you tried to control me.”

He lowered his eyes.

Beatrice said, “No one told him to strike you.”

“But you wanted me frightened,” I replied.

“We needed you reasonable.”

“You invited witnesses, forged my resignation, and brought his mistress into my baby shower.”

Arthur pushed back from the table.

“We were protecting the company.”

I looked at each of them.

Arthur wanted to protect his business from the consequences of his own decisions.

Beatrice wanted to protect the Winslow name because status was the only language in which she understood love.

Julian wanted his father’s approval more than he wanted to become safe for his wife or child.

Chloe wanted security badly enough to participate in someone else’s destruction.

I had wanted a complete family so desperately that I kept explaining behavior I would have condemned in any audit.

The meeting ended when Beatrice said the one sentence none of their attorneys wanted recorded in official notes.

“We only needed Clara unstable,” she said. “No one needed her injured.”

Intent had finally entered the room in her own words.
