Chapter 14 - THE LAST OFFER FROM THE WINSLOW FAMILY
Arthur and Beatrice requested a final private meeting.
Their attorney placed a settlement proposal on the table.
They would pay my medical expenses, return the money I invested in Julian’s house, and place substantial funds into a trust for Evelyn.
They would also create a separate trust for Chloe’s baby if testing confirmed Julian’s paternity.
In return, I would issue a statement saying the baby-shower confrontation had been a spontaneous marital dispute unrelated to the company’s finances.
Arthur spoke as though the offer were generous.
“This gives both children security.”
“Using money you took from the company?”
“Using assets that remain ours.”
Beatrice watched me with the calm expression she used during charity luncheons.
“Think beyond your anger.”
“I am.”
“You can make certain Evelyn never worries about tuition, housing, or medical care.”
“I can also teach her that wealthy people are allowed to buy a different version of what they did.”
Beatrice’s composure slipped.
“You are destroying her inheritance.”
“The company is in receivership. There is no inheritance.”
Arthur turned toward Julian.
“Tell her what happens if this becomes public.”
Julian sat apart from them.
For years, he had repeated whatever his father needed him to say.
This time, he remained silent.
Arthur’s voice hardened.
“I built everything you have.”
Julian finally looked at him.
“No. You made sure everything I had could be taken away.”
Beatrice called him ungrateful.
Julian flinched, but he did not change his answer.
He signed the cooperation agreement.
Chloe had already signed hers.
Meredith’s records were submitted.
I rejected the private settlement and asked the receiver to prioritize unpaid workers and affected homebuyers over any payment to me beyond documented medical and property claims.
The decision did not make me noble.
It cost me money Evelyn could have used.
But accepting the offer would have preserved the exact system that allowed Arthur and Beatrice to turn dependency into obedience.
Their attorney notified prosecutors that the family would accept the formal plea terms.
