Chapter 11 - Caleb Couldn’t Hide Behind Manipulation

Learning how thoroughly Meredith had manipulated the household gave Caleb an excuse.

He refused to use it.

Meredith had lied.

Meredith had staged incidents.

Meredith had spent months feeding him suspicion.

But when Caleb entered the nursery and saw June holding his injured daughter, nobody moved his leg for him.

He chose to kick her.

His attorney told him prosecutors would consider the circumstances.

Caleb answered, “They should consider all of them.”

Including the worst one.

June had been holding Elara safely.

He had taken the baby from her.

Then he attacked her while Meredith stood behind him.

Caleb agreed to anger-management counseling before anyone ordered it.

Not because he believed he had an ongoing violence problem.

Because he finally understood that believing yourself controlled did not make you controlled.

His temper had been one of Meredith’s tools because it existed.

June returned to work only once.

Not as Elara’s nanny.

To say goodbye.

Caleb offered to continue her salary while she recovered.

June accepted the medical reimbursement his insurance and legal counsel arranged.

She refused the job.

“I love Elara,” she said.

“I know.”

“But I can’t work in that house again.”

Caleb nodded.

“I understand.”

“No. I need you to really understand.”

She looked toward the nursery doorway.

“The worst part wasn’t Meredith hitting me.”

Caleb already knew what she would say.

“It was you.”

“Yes.”

June’s voice remained calm.

“I trusted you to be the reasonable person in that house.”

Caleb absorbed it.

He wanted to promise that he had changed.

He didn’t.

A promise would have been easy.

Instead he asked whether she would ever want updates about Elara.

June hesitated.

“Pictures sometimes.”

“Okay.”

“And if she ever asks about me when she’s older, don’t tell her I left because the work was hard.”

“I won’t.”

“Tell her the truth.”

Caleb looked at June.

“I will.”

For the first time since the nursery, June seemed to believe something he said.

Not forgive.

May you like

Believe.

That was enough for the day.
