Chapter 1 - The Woman Caleb Chose to Believe

Elara was already crying when Meredith stepped closer to the gold crib.

The nursery glowed warmly beneath the chandelier, almost offensively peaceful against the sound of the ten-month-old’s distress. A small black security camera sat above the doorway. Beside the cream wall stood a wooden clothing rack holding tiny dresses and folded blankets.

June was moving toward the crib when Meredith pressed the hot electric iron against Elara’s hand.

The baby screamed.

June didn’t think.

She drove one hard kick into Meredith’s arm.

The iron flew across the nursery, struck the wall hard enough to crack the plaster, then dropped onto a white towel on the floor. The fabric immediately began to burn.

“SHE NEEDS TO LEARN.”

June shoved past Meredith.

She lifted Elara from the crib and looked at the baby’s injured hand.

“Oh my God—Elara!”

Elara’s crying weakened.

Her small body sagged against June’s shoulder.

June turned toward the door.

Meredith slapped her hard across the face.

June staggered but kept both arms around the baby.

The nursery door flew open.

Caleb rushed in.

He took in everything at once—the crying child, June holding her, Meredith beside the crib, the burning towel, the iron on the floor.

Meredith changed instantly.

The cruelty disappeared from her face.

Panic replaced it.

She pointed at June.

“SHE SNAPPED—SHE HURT THE BABY!”

Caleb didn’t ask a question.

He crossed the room, ripped Elara from June’s arms and pulled his daughter against his chest.

“What did you do?!”

June barely had time to open her mouth.

Caleb kicked her hard in the stomach.

She flew backward into the wooden clothing rack.

Wood cracked beneath her weight. The rack collapsed around her.

Caleb did not kick her again.

Elara remained against his chest.

Meredith stood behind him.

June lay among splintered pieces of the rack, struggling for breath.

Then her hand disappeared beneath her blouse.

Meredith’s expression changed.

June pulled out a small USB drive.

She raised it toward Caleb.

“WATCH THIS FIRST.”

Caleb froze.

So did Meredith.

The difference between their faces was immediate.

Caleb looked confused.

Meredith looked terrified.

June saw it.

So did Caleb.

The baby whimpered against his chest.

Smoke curled upward from the towel until Caleb used his shoe to drag it away from the crib.

Nobody moved toward June.

Nobody moved toward Meredith.

For several seconds, the only important object in the nursery was the tiny USB between June’s trembling fingers.

Then June looked past Caleb toward the black security camera above the doorway.

Meredith followed her gaze.

And Caleb finally noticed that Meredith wasn’t looking at his injured daughter.

She was looking at the camera.
