Chapter 13 - A Truth That Saves No One
The bank offered Margaret two paths. She could deny every withdrawal, pushing the case toward a fraud referral that included Caroline, or acknowledge the first $5,800 as a family benefit and risk the entire balance. Neither answer was clean. Caroline asked her not to lie. Wade asked her to remember the grandchildren. Margaret spent one night at the kitchen table with the green file closed and the kettle untouched. In the morning she gave the investigator the narrow truth. She had never authorized a loan. May received necessary care from the first withdrawal, and Caroline requested it without permission. Wade controlled every increase afterward. Margaret agreed to pursue civil repayment and cooperate with the bank's review, but she would not sign a statement protecting Caroline. The choice might cost her daughter a job and months of legal fees. It might also be the first help Margaret offered that did not erase the consequence. Caroline nodded once and said, "Then I tell all of it too."
