Chapter 12 - The First Line Crossed

Caroline's final admission changed the first withdrawal again. May needed feeding therapy after the NICU, and insurance denied the out-of-network program. Caroline asked Wade to use Margaret's authority for $5,800, promising repayment before she noticed. Wade resisted at first. Caroline said, "Mom always says the money is for the kids." That sentence became his permission. The first draw paid the clinic. The second covered lost wages. By the third, Wade was using the line for his failing consulting work, truck payments, and the Hilton Head deposit. Caroline kept paying because exposing him meant exposing herself. Her Memorial Day rage was partly genuine: she needed Margaret to babysit so she could confront Wade's partner on the trip and keep her own schedule intact. The kettle, the reversed $800, the drops, and her knowledge of the fraud extension came from one fact: Caroline had managed the damage before trying to stop it. She protected Margaret only after helping Wade cross the line.
