Chapter 8 - VANESSA HAD HER OWN REASON TO WANT THE DIVORCE QUIETVanessa was not merely Ethan's mistress.

That would have been simpler.

She was connected to the compensation package too.

As chief communications officer, she oversaw executive reputation, investor communications, and the rollout of Meridian Crest's reorganization.

During the independent review, the audit committee found that Vanessa had also received a consulting agreement through a separate media firm she owned.

Not illegal automatically.

But not properly disclosed.

Her firm received $186,000 over fourteen months for strategic communications work.

Some services were real.

Some duplicated her executive responsibilities.

Ethan approved the arrangement.

That was a conflict.

Then there was housing.

Meridian Crest leased an apartment near its headquarters for visiting executives and clients.

Vanessa used it regularly.

Building access logs showed Ethan there overnight twenty-three times in six months.

The affair was not difficult to prove once anyone actually looked.

The harder question was whether corporate resources had subsidized it.

The special committee investigated.

I did not direct them.

I did not receive daily updates.

That restraint drove Ethan crazy.

He wanted me involved enough to blame.

I refused.

One evening Vanessa emailed me personally.

We need to talk woman to woman.

I almost deleted it.

Instead, I agreed to meet in Priya's office with counsel aware.

Vanessa arrived without the burgundy dress or boardroom confidence.

“You hate me.”

“I don't know you well enough.”

That offended her more.

“I never wanted your inheritance.”

“Good.”

“I didn't know about the fifty-eight percent.”

“I believe that.”

She blinked.

“You do?”

“Yes.”

Some lies were unnecessary.

I continued.

“You did know I hadn't agreed to divorce.”

Her face changed.

“Ethan said you knew.”

“Did I behave like someone who knew?”

“He said you were refusing to discuss it.”

“That doesn't answer me.”

She looked down.

“No.”

There it was.

“When did you know something was wrong?”

“After the decree.”

“And you stayed with him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“Because he'd already ended the marriage.”

“On paper.”

“He told me you were emotionally done.”

I almost laughed.

Apparently my emotional condition was something Ethan distributed in memos.

Then Vanessa revealed her own motive for helping keep everything quiet.

Ethan had promised to appoint her president of a newly consolidated communications-and-strategy division after the board approved his reorganization.

Her promotion would more than double the value of her long-term incentive package.

If their affair became public before the restructuring vote, the appointment would face scrutiny.

So they waited.

Secret divorce.

Secret relationship.

Publicly stable CEO marriage.

Everything scheduled.

Again, Ethan's favorite architecture.

Reality arranged after decisions.

Vanessa helped because she expected a future too.

Not my house.

Not my inheritance.

Title.

Money.

Status.

When she called me “never enough” in the boardroom, she wasn't only insulting a wife.

She was defending a story where Claire's disappearance was necessary for Vanessa's life to begin.

That explained her.

It did not excuse her.
