Chapter 14 - THE DIVORCE WE ACTUALLY CHOSEThe secret decree was vacated.

That did not mean Ethan and I stayed married.

It meant the divorce had to happen correctly.

For real.

With notice.

Disclosure.

Negotiation.

Two people sitting at separate tables agreeing what belonged where.

Our Tribeca apartment was sold.

Joint investments divided.

Ethan retained his vested Meridian Crest shares.

I did not use my voting control to force a repurchase.

My inherited shares remained mine.

The Reynolds assets remained mine.

The final settlement acknowledged the disputed executive-benefit documents and resolved related marital claims without pretending the twelve-year marriage had ended cleanly two months before I learned about it.

Vanessa was gone from Ethan's life by then.

I did not ask why.

He volunteered once:

“We didn't survive the aftermath.”

I replied:

“That isn't my business anymore.”

He nodded.

That was one of the first boundaries he accepted without argument.

Ethan took a COO role at a healthcare software company in Boston.

Smaller than Meridian Crest.

Still significant.

He was good at his job.

That had never been the problem.

Vanessa joined a crisis-communications firm.

From what I heard, she was good there too.

People are allowed to remain talented after behaving badly.

The divorce became final fourteen months after the boardroom confrontation.

This time I attended.

So did Ethan.

No hidden service.

No fraudulent waiver.

The judge asked if we understood.

We both said yes.

Outside the courthouse, Ethan stopped me.

“Claire.”

I turned.

He held a white envelope.

“No.”

His face changed.

“You don't even know what it is.”

“I know I don't want it today.”

For once, he didn't push.

He put it back in his coat.

“Okay.”

That tiny moment affected me more than his boardroom collapse.

A year earlier, Ethan would have decided I needed to hear him.

Now he allowed no.

Too late for marriage.

Not too late for him.

I walked away without wondering whether he followed.

He didn't.
