Chapter 8 - Daniel Made the Decision Vanessa Feared

Daniel filed for legal separation.

Not divorce yet.

He was not ready to make every permanent decision in one week.

But Vanessa would not return to living with Lily.

His attorney helped him document the incident and establish that Lily remained solely in Daniel’s care.

Vanessa had never legally adopted Lily.

That mattered.

She had acted as a stepparent.

She did not automatically possess the same parental rights Daniel did.

When Daniel told her, Vanessa’s face crumpled.

“So I’m just nobody now?”

“That’s not what I said.”

“You’re removing me from her life like I meant nothing.”

Daniel almost shouted.

Instead he asked:

“When she cried for me while I was gone, what did you do?”

Vanessa stared at him.

He waited.

She whispered, “Sometimes I told her to stop.”

“And when she didn’t?”

Vanessa looked away.

There was the answer.

Daniel continued.

“You’re worried about what you’re losing. I’m trying to understand what she already lost.”

Vanessa sat down.

For the first time, she admitted she had resented Lily almost from the beginning.

Not constantly.

Not openly.

But each time Daniel prioritized Lily, Vanessa heard Margaret’s voice telling her she would always come second.

Daniel said, “Then you needed therapy.”

“I know.”

“You needed to leave me.”

“I know.”

“You did not need to punish a two-year-old.”

Vanessa covered her face.

This time Daniel let her cry.

But he did not change his decision.
