Chapter 11 - Daniel Had to Admit What He Missed
Daniel hated that Vanessa’s admission forced him to examine himself.
He had not abused Lily.
He had not approved of anything Vanessa or Margaret did.
But he had been absent more than he wanted to admit.
Seventy-hour workweeks.
Weekend emergency calls.
Constant overtime because providing financially felt like the safest way to protect Lily.
After Megan died, Daniel had become terrified of instability.
So he worked.
After Vanessa miscarried, he worked more.
He assumed money, structure, and a beautiful house meant his family was secure.
Meanwhile the actual danger existed at the dining table.
His therapist asked:
“What did Lily do when you came home?”
“Ran to me.”
“What did you think that meant?”
“She missed me.”
“What might it mean now?”
Daniel couldn’t answer immediately.
Safety.
She had been running toward safety.
The realization devastated him.
He reduced his overtime.
His employer reassigned one weekend rotation temporarily.
Aaron helped with childcare.
Rachel began visiting Lily regularly.
Daniel rebuilt routines.
Breakfast together.
Daycare pickup.
Bath.
Books.
Bedtime.
Nothing dramatic.
But Lily stopped watching the garage door every evening.
That change made Daniel both grateful and ashamed.
