Chapter 7 - Margaret Had Been Testing Daniel Too
Rachel agreed to speak with Daniel’s attorney about what she had personally witnessed.
Then another relative called.
Daniel’s uncle, Steven.
He had attended several family dinners.
“I thought Margaret was just being Margaret,” he said.
“What does that mean?”
“Controlling.”
Steven described a pattern Daniel had not recognized because much of it happened before he arrived.
Margaret would criticize Lily’s clothing.
Ask why Daniel spent so much on daycare.
Tell Vanessa she was “raising another woman’s legacy.”
Then, whenever Daniel entered the room, Margaret changed tone.
Warm grandmother.
Helpful mother-in-law.
Perfect family.
Daniel remembered dozens of Sunday dinners where Lily immediately climbed into his lap.
Margaret always laughed.
“Daddy’s home, so now the princess gets whatever she wants.”
He had laughed too.
Now the joke sounded different.
Daniel asked Steven why nobody told him.
Steven hesitated.
“Because every time anyone pushed back on Margaret, Vanessa defended her.”
“And everybody decided that made it okay?”
“No.”
Steven sighed.
“We decided it wasn’t our marriage.”
Daniel looked down.
That was the sentence every witness used when intervention felt uncomfortable.
Not our marriage.
Not our child.
Not our problem.
Until Lily was lying on the floor.

It survived because too many adults thought staying neutral was harmless.
