Chapter 4 - The Camera She Thought She Covered

Eleanor climbed onto the chair and draped a dish towel over the kitchen camera.

For forty-three minutes, the screen showed nothing but blurred yellow fabric.

Then the towel slipped.

The camera did not capture everything, but it captured enough.

My mother stood at the refrigerator filling reusable bags with food our neighbors had delivered. She carried those bags downstairs and returned empty-handed.

She lowered the thermostat.

She removed Maya’s prescription bottle from the counter, counted the pills, and put it in her coat pocket. Twelve minutes later, she returned it.

She took the old kitchen iPad from its wall mount and typed with both hands.

Maya appeared at the edge of the frame, moving slowly, one arm around her abdomen.

“I need my phone,” she said.

“You need to stop creating emergencies.”

“Daniel told me to call if Liam’s temperature changed.”

“Daniel told you to listen to me.”

Eleanor held up the tablet.

Maya read the message on its screen.

Her shoulders lowered.

That was the moment she believed I had chosen my mother.

I paused the footage.

Marcus sat beside me without speaking.

The next clip showed Eleanor placing her own phone against a fruit bowl, camera pointed toward Maya. She began recording only after Maya was crying.

“Tell Daniel why there’s no food,” Eleanor said.

“You threw it away.”

“Tell him how you forgot to order more.”

“I didn’t forget.”

“Look at yourself. You can barely remember what day it is.”

Eleanor stopped her recording before removing Maya’s phone from the closet and checking the screen.

This had not been a single argument that escalated.

She was creating selected scenes.

I downloaded every file to two external drives and sent copies to a secure folder Marcus controlled.

Then I called Maya.

“There are videos.”

She was quiet for several seconds.

“Of what she did?”

“Yes.”

“Of what you did?”

I did not understand.

“You left me with her after I begged you not to,” Maya said. “Is that on the video too?”

“No.”

“Then the camera doesn’t show the whole betrayal.”

The call ended.

When I opened the apartment door to leave, my younger sister Grace was standing on the landing.

She looked past me into the kitchen.

“Mom says Maya attacked her,” she said. “She says you’re destroying the family over a postpartum episode.”

I held the door open.

“Come watch what actually happened.”

Grace did not step inside.

May you like

Her eyes moved toward the covered camera.

Then she whispered, “I already know she was recording Maya.”
