Chapter 14 - The Door I Did Not Open

Eleanor buzzed our apartment at 9:15 p.m.

Snow clung to the shoulders of her cream coat. Through the doorbell camera, I could see a small suitcase beside her.

“I need to speak to you before tomorrow,” she said.

I kept the door locked.

Maya stood behind me with Liam in her arms.

“What do you want?” I asked through the intercom.

“To tell my son the truth without lawyers twisting everything.”

“You had weeks.”

“I was ashamed.”

Maya’s expression did not change.

Eleanor continued.

She had sold jewelry and withdrawn what remained of a retirement account. She could repay most of the $18,400 within thirty days. She would cooperate with the bank regarding my father’s identity.

In return, she wanted us to say the kitchen incident had been an argument, not abuse.

She wanted Maya to withdraw her statement about being denied medication.

She wanted me to tell the detective I had previously promised the cruise money.

“You want us to lie,” I said.

“I want you to keep your mother from being prosecuted.”

“You asked me to choose between you and my wife for years.”

“I am asking you to remember who raised you.”

Behind me, Liam began to fuss. Maya shifted him against her shoulder and walked toward the nursery.

Eleanor heard him through the intercom.

“Please let me see him.”

“No.”

The word hurt.

I let it.

My mother began crying. For most of my life, her tears had functioned like instructions. Apologize. Soften. Give in. Restore the version of the family she could survive.

This time I did not open the door.

“I’ll cooperate with any lawful repayment,” I said. “I won’t alter the report.”

“You’ll lose me.”

I looked toward the nursery where Maya was warming Liam’s blanket against the radiator.

“I nearly lost them.”

Eleanor stood outside for another minute.

Then she picked up her suitcase and walked down the brownstone steps.

The following morning, she entered the precinct with her attorney.

She corrected her financial statement.

She admitted using the tablet.

She still claimed the kitchen violence had been exaggerated.

The detective closed the file in front of her and said it would be forwarded for prosecutorial review.

The final exposure could no longer be negotiated back into a family secret.
