Chapter 8 - The Boundary Daniel Had Never Set Before

Evelyn called before we left Madison.
Daniel answered.
“Do not come to our house.”
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“Daniel, whatever Caroline showed you—”
“You knew Maya was Owen’s birth mother.”
Silence.
“You intercepted letters.”
“I can explain.”
“That phrase sounds different when you say it, doesn’t it?”
Evelyn’s voice sharpened.
“You have a newborn daughter. This is not the time to blow up this family.”
Daniel stared through the windshield.
“You tried to blow up my marriage in a hospital room twelve hours after my wife gave birth.”
“Maya lied to you.”
“Yes.”
I looked at him.
He continued.
“And we will deal with that privately. You do not get to use her lie to erase yours.”
Evelyn began crying.
Daniel did not soften.
“Until I know exactly what you did, you do not see Emma.”
The silence on the other end lasted several seconds.
“You can’t keep my granddaughter from me.”
“I can keep my daughter away from someone who used a newborn’s hospital bracelet as a weapon.”
Then he ended the call.
I stared at him.
“You don’t have to do that because of me.”
“I’m not.”
He looked at me.
“I’m doing it because she has spent years deciding what everyone else is allowed to know.”
That night, after we got home, I made my own decision.
I contacted the adoption firm.
The original attorney had retired, but a successor agency still maintained the confidential file.
I asked them to contact Owen’s adoptive parents.
Not Owen directly.
Not secretly.
Through the proper channel.
I wrote:
I recently learned that letters intended for me were withheld and that letters I sent may never have reached you. I did not choose to disappear. I do not want to disrupt Owen’s life. If he ever wants contact, I am willing to move at whatever pace is safest for him.
My finger hovered over SEND.
For twelve years, other people had made choices because they believed I could not handle the truth.
May you like
I was terrified of becoming one of them.
So I sent it.
