Chapter 13 - Evelyn Finally Faces the Person She Blamed

Daniel did not allow Evelyn to see Emma for seven weeks.
She complained at first.
Then something changed.
She stopped calling every day.
She began therapy.
She mailed Daniel a written account of what she had done with the correspondence.
No excuses.
No claims that she had only been protecting him.
Then she asked to speak to me.
I agreed.
We met at a coffee shop near our house.
Public.
Neutral.
Evelyn looked smaller than she had in the hospital.
She did not wear makeup.
For once, she seemed uninterested in controlling how the room saw her.
“I hated you before I knew you,” she said.
I waited.
“Not because of anything you did.”
“That makes it worse.”
“I know.”
She explained Julian had spent years exhausting the family.
Loans.
Jobs he quit.
Plans he abandoned.
Promises.
Ruth cleaned up the financial mess.
Evelyn cleaned up everything else.
Then Julian died.
Suddenly nobody was allowed to be angry with him anymore.
He was the tragic son.
The lost brother.
And I was still alive.
Pregnant.
Needing something.
“So you transferred all that anger onto me.”
“Yes.”
“When you found out Daniel was dating me?”
“It felt like Julian had walked back into my life.”
I almost stood.
“I’m not Julian.”
“I know that now.”
“No. You knew it then too.”
Evelyn looked down.
That mattered.
Cruelty does not become accidental because someone finally understands its psychology.
Then I asked the question I had carried for weeks.
“Why did you keep the letters instead of destroying them?”
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“Because every time I tried to throw them away, I knew I was doing something unforgivable.”
I stared at her.
“So you kept proof?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I think I kept a way back.”
That answer did not redeem her.
But it sounded true.
Before leaving, Evelyn asked whether she could someday see Emma.
“Someday.”
She nodded.
“And Owen?”
“That is not your decision.”
For once, she accepted the boundary immediately.
Then she handed me a sealed envelope.
“For him.”
I did not take it.
“Not until he asks.”
Evelyn slowly placed it back in her purse.
May you like
The next choice belonged to Owen.
Not her.
