Chapter 11 - Daniel Refused to Let One Betrayal Cancel Another

I expected Daniel to forgive me after learning what his mother had done.

He didn’t.

That was one of the reasons I still trusted him.

We drove home from Caroline’s mostly in silence.

After Emma was asleep, Daniel sat across from me in the living room.

“My mother was wrong.”

“Yes.”

“What she did to you was cruel.”

I nodded.

“And you still lied to me.”

There it was.

“I know.”

“For eleven years.”

“I know.”

He looked exhausted.

“If Mom hadn’t found that bracelet, were you ever going to tell me?”

I wanted to say yes.

But honesty had become too expensive to waste on a comforting answer.

“I don’t know.”

Daniel looked away.

That hurt him more.

I told him the truth I had avoided admitting even to myself.

I had planned to tell him before marriage.

Then before trying for a baby.

Then during pregnancy.

Every time the moment approached, I pictured his face changing.

I feared he would see me as a woman who abandoned a child.

So I postponed it.

Then postponement became a marriage.

“I didn’t trust you to know the worst thing about me and stay.”

Daniel’s eyes met mine.

“That was my choice to make.”

“Yes.”

We started marriage counseling the following week.

No dramatic reconciliation.

No quick forgiveness.

We talked about the scar.

The missing years.

My fear.

His anger.

And the uncomfortable truth that both Evelyn and I had done different versions of the same thing.

We had decided Daniel was easier to love if we controlled what he knew.

One night he finally returned to our bedroom.

He did not say everything was fixed.

He simply lay beside me.

At two in the morning, Emma started crying.

We both reached for her.

Our hands touched.

Neither of us pulled away.

Then my phone lit up on the nightstand.
