Chapter 6 - WHAT CLAIRE HAD MISSED AT HOME
For all Claire’s anger at the school, Logan’s therapist forced her to look somewhere harder.
At herself.
“Did Logan tell you about school before the video?” Dr. Patel asked.
Claire shifted in the chair.
“Not exactly.”
“What did he say?”
“That Mrs. Hart was mean.”
“How did you respond?”
Claire remembered.
“She’s strict because she wants you to learn.”
“What else?”
“He said she yelled.”
“And?”
“I told him teachers sometimes use strong voices.”
Dr. Patel waited.
Claire felt ashamed.
“I thought he was adjusting.”
“That’s understandable.”
“I explained everything away.”
“You were trying to reassure him.”
“I taught him not to trust his own reaction.”
Dr. Patel did not contradict her.
That was worse.
Claire had always considered herself protective.
She checked car seats twice.
Read medication labels.
Knew every adult authorized for pickup.
But emotional danger had been less obvious.
And Claire was busy.
Her promotion six months earlier came with longer days.
Logan’s father, Michael, had died when Logan was two after a sudden cardiac event.
Claire had been parenting alone ever since.
She hated the idea that Logan might become overly fearful.
So she praised toughness.
“You’re okay.”
“Give it another day.”
“Mrs. Hart is probably just strict.”
Every sentence had been well meant.
Together they taught Logan that adult explanations outranked his discomfort.
Claire cried in her car after therapy.
Then another relationship shifted.
Daniel Brooks called.
“I owe you an apology.”
“For what?”
“Cynthia had access because I ran the office lazily.”
Claire was surprised.
He continued.
“I let one employee become the keeper of everything because she was reliable. Passwords. parent complaints. staff conflicts. I thought efficiency was management.”
“And?”
“It created a private system inside the official one.”
Brooks had missed warnings too.
Several teachers remembered Mrs. Hart making demeaning comments.
One aide asked to be reassigned from her classroom the previous year.
Brooks approved the transfer.
He never asked enough about why.
He had interpreted turnover as personality conflict.
Claire realized the uncomfortable truth.
Mrs. Hart’s behavior had survived not because everyone was cruel.
