Chapter 2 - THE BOY WHO HAD STOPPED ASKING FOR HELP

Claire reached Brookfield Elementary in twenty-two minutes.

She broke three personal rules getting there.

She left work without explanation.

Ignored two calls from her supervisor.

And drove ten miles over the limit until she forced herself to slow down.

By the time she entered the main office, Logan was sitting beside the school counselor with a paper cup of water.

He ran to Claire.

She dropped to her knees.

“Are you hurt?”

He shook his head.

“Did she hit you?”

“No.”

Claire held him anyway.

Daniel Brooks appeared in the doorway.

“Mrs. Morgan, we need to talk.”

“Not until my son is out of that classroom.”

“He already is.”

“Not until he knows he isn’t going back.”

Brooks hesitated.

That hesitation angered her more than a bad answer.

“What happened?” she demanded.

“We’re still determining that.”

“I watched her terrorize him.”

“I know.”

“And that camera was covered.”

“Yes.”

Claire stood.

“Then what exactly are you still determining?”

Brooks looked toward Logan.

“Who covered it.”

Claire almost said the obvious name.

Then Logan tugged her sleeve.

“Mom?”

She looked down.

“Mrs. Hart says I make trouble when I tell things.”

Claire’s anger stopped.

“How often does she say that?”

Logan shrugged.

The gesture was small.

Too familiar.

Claire crouched again.

“Buddy, has she scared you before?”

His eyes dropped to the floor.

“Sometimes.”

Claire felt the question she should have asked weeks earlier arrive all at once.

Why had Logan started complaining of stomachaches before school?

Why had he stopped drawing pictures of his classroom?

Why had he asked whether he could get in trouble for making teachers angry?

Claire had treated each thing separately.

Kindergarten adjustment.

Fatigue.

A sensitive child.

Now she saw a pattern.

Not today.

Not one bad morning.

Long enough for Logan to believe telling the truth was itself dangerous.

Claire turned toward Brooks.

“I want every camera record preserved.”

He nodded.

“I already requested that.”

“And Mrs. Hart?”

“Removed from classroom duties pending review.”

It was a start.

Then Claire pointed toward his pocket.

“What did you find inside that cloth?”

Brooks said nothing.

Claire’s voice sharpened.

“You hid something.”

“I secured something.”

“What?”

He looked uncomfortable.

“A key.”

“To what?”

“I don’t know yet.”

Claire knew he was lying about one part.

He knew enough to be afraid.
