Chapter 14 - THE LAST DAY MRS. HART COULD CALL IT A MISUNDERSTANDING
Mrs. Hart appealed the termination recommendation.
Her final hearing took place almost ten months after Claire first opened the camera feed.
Claire attended only because she was called to provide a factual statement.
Mrs. Hart’s attorney emphasized her twenty-three-year record.
Strong academic results.
Positive parent letters.
No allegation that she physically struck a child.
The district acknowledged all of it.
Then presented the pattern.
Not one ruler strike.
Not one covered camera.
A deliberate effort to remove oversight after prior discipline concerns.
Mrs. Hart testified again.
This time she sounded less certain.
“I felt watched constantly.”
The district attorney asked:
“Were you?”
“Yes.”
“By whom?”
“Administrators. Parents. Cameras. Everyone.”
“Did that affect your teaching?”
“It made me cautious.”
“Then why disable the monitoring?”
Mrs. Hart looked tired.
“Because I wanted to teach the way I knew worked.”
“Without being evaluated?”
“Without being second-guessed.”
The answer was finally clean.
Claire almost felt sorry for her.
Mrs. Hart had spent decades earning authority.
Then interpreted accountability as disrespect.
She was not fighting to prove the camera had malfunctioned anymore.
She was defending the belief that she should have been allowed to turn it off.
The hearing officer upheld the termination recommendation.
The school board would make the final employment decision the following week.
Outside, Mrs. Hart passed Claire.
She stopped.
“I hope your son is happy.”
Claire could not tell whether it was sincere.
“Thank you.”
Mrs. Hart looked surprised.
Perhaps she expected anger.
Claire had no interest in performing it anymore.
Then Mrs. Hart said:
“I really did care about those children.”
Claire believed her.
“That was never enough.”
Mrs. Hart’s face tightened.
Claire continued walking.
Care without humility had frightened Logan.
Experience without accountability had protected Mrs. Hart.
Good intentions had protected Cynthia.
Busyness had protected Brooks.
Reassurance had protected Claire from seeing what Logan was trying to say.
Everyone had a reason.
None erased the consequence.
The following Thursday, the board voted.
Mrs. Hart’s employment ended.
