Chapter 6 - THE SISTER WHO HAD ALREADY LEFT
Erin Whitmore contacted Chloe on Tuesday.
Derek’s older sister had skipped the wedding.
The official explanation was a work commitment in Seattle.
Chloe had always found that strange.
Erin managed medical-device sales and routinely flew cross-country for family funerals, birthdays, and Christmas.
But not her brother’s wedding.
Her message contained six words.
I heard you left the house.
Chloe answered carefully.
Yes.
The phone rang seconds later.
Erin spoke without greeting.
“Did Mom ask you for money?”
“No.”
“That means Derek did it for her.”
Chloe sat down.
“You knew the mansion was in trouble?”
“I knew it would be eventually.”
“Why?”
“Because I stopped paying into it.”
That was new.
Erin explained that after Robert died, Brenda began treating the mansion as a shared family obligation.
New roof.
Property taxes.
Landscaping.
Insurance.
Derek contributed heavily.
Erin contributed too, for almost two years.
Then she stopped.
“Mom called me selfish.”
“Why did you stop?”
“Because every time we fixed one problem, Derek created another.”
Chloe straightened.
“What does that mean?”
Erin paused.
“I’m not giving you family gossip and calling it fact. Ask Derek where the proceeds from the 2023 home-equity loan went.”
Chloe’s stomach tightened.
“What loan?”
“Exactly.”
Erin continued.
“I thought he told you.”
“He didn’t.”
“Then you need documents, not me.”
That restraint made Chloe trust her more.
“Why weren’t you at the wedding?”
Erin went quiet.
“Mom told me you were selling your condo.”
“So?”
“I asked Derek whether he finally planned to get his own place.”
“What did he say?”
“He said, ‘After the wedding, everything gets easier.’”
Chloe closed her eyes.
Erin continued.
“I knew what that meant in our family.”
“What?”
“Another person had entered the rescue rotation.”
The sentence hurt because it was so ordinary.
Nobody had plotted Chloe’s destruction in a dark room.
They had simply grown accustomed to converting relatives into resources.
Erin had escaped.
Derek had stayed.
Brenda called sacrifice loyalty.
Then everyone adjusted.
“What should I do?” Chloe asked.
Erin answered immediately.
“I’m not telling you.”
Chloe almost smiled.
“That might be the healthiest thing anyone in this family has said to me.”
“I spent twelve years being told what I owed people because we shared DNA.”
Erin paused.
“You’ve been married four days. Decide what you owe yourself before they tell you.”
By evening, the first relationship had shifted.

The sister Chloe had assumed disliked her was the first Whitmore who refused to pressure her in either direction.
And she had pointed Chloe toward a loan Derek apparently never intended his new wife to discover.
