Chapter 3 - THE CALL FROM A BANK SHE HAD NEVER VISITED

At 9:06 Sunday morning, Chloe’s cell phone rang.

The caller identified herself as Lauren Kim from Fairfield Heritage Bank.

Chloe nearly hung up.

Then Lauren mentioned Derek’s full name.

“I’m calling regarding Monday’s scheduled appointment.”

Chloe sat slowly on the edge of the bed.

“What appointment?”

There was a brief silence.

“I’m sorry. Am I speaking with Chloe Morgan Whitmore?”

“Yes.”

Lauren’s tone changed immediately.

“Before we continue, I need to verify some information.”

Five minutes later, after standard identity checks, Chloe asked again.

“What appointment?”

Lauren answered carefully.

“A meeting related to a residential refinance application.”

“I’m not refinancing anything.”

Another pause.

“The property is on Round Hill Road in Greenwich.”

Brenda’s mansion.

Chloe stood.

“My mother-in-law’s house?”

“Yes.”

“Why are you calling me?”

“You’re identified in the preliminary file as a proposed contributing guarantor.”

Chloe felt the air leave her chest.

“I never agreed to guarantee Brenda’s house.”

Lauren stopped discussing specifics.

“I understand. In that case, I need to note that immediately and have our lending officer contact you.”

“Who gave you my information?”

“I can’t make assumptions about that.”

“Do you have my bank statements?”

Lauren was silent one second too long.

Chloe closed her eyes.

“You do.”

“I think this needs to be reviewed by our compliance team.”

Chloe sat back down.

“What was supposed to happen Monday?”

“The current appointment should be canceled until we establish what you authorized.”

Chloe’s fingers tightened around the phone.

“Was forty-five thousand dollars listed anywhere?”

Lauren would not confirm detailed contents until the bank completed its internal review.

That restraint somehow frightened Chloe more.

She ended the call and immediately photographed the cashier’s check, marriage certificate, passport, and every page she had brought from the mansion.

Then she called her own bank.

No unauthorized transfer had occurred.

Her personal accounts remained intact.

Next she changed the passwords on her email, banking, cloud storage, and phone provider.

Only after that did she call Derek.

He answered before the first full ring.

“What did you do?”

Chloe almost laughed.

“Interesting opening.”

“Did you call Fairfield Heritage?”

“They called me.”

Silence.

“What is a contributing guarantor, Derek?”

“Chloe, please let me explain.”

“Explain.”

“It isn’t what it sounds like.”

“What does it sound like?”

“My mother needs a refinance.”

“And?”

“And the bank needed stronger financial support.”

“You submitted my information?”

“We were getting married.”

“That isn’t consent.”

“I wasn’t signing for you.”

“You put me on an application.”

“It was preliminary.”

“You told them I would contribute money.”

Derek exhaled sharply.

“You said we were building a life together.”

“In our house.”

“This house is part of my future.”

“Then use your money.”

Another silence.

Then Derek said something that stripped away the last possibility of misunderstanding.

“My money is already in it.”

Chloe stared at the hotel wall.

“How much?”

He didn’t answer.

“Derek.”

“We need to talk in person.”

“No.”

“Chloe.”

“How much money do you have tied up in your mother’s house?”

He hung up.

The first serious consequence of the marriage had arrived before Chloe had even removed her wedding manicure.

She wasn’t simply deciding whether to forgive humiliating behavior.

She had to find out whether the man she married had used her financial identity to rescue a house he had never told her was drowning.
