Chapter 11 - THE DAMAGE AFTER THE NUMBER

Erin did not speak to Derek for nearly two weeks.
Brenda blamed Chloe.
“She has turned my children against each other.”
Chloe read the text and handed the phone to Jenna.
Jenna looked at it.
“Do you want me to answer?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Chloe was discovering that not every accusation required a defense.
The bank concluded that Derek had improperly used Chloe’s financial information and online banking access in connection with a preliminary loan application.
Because no loan had closed and no signature had been forged, the consequences were less cinematic than Brenda predicted and more serious than Derek hoped.
The application was terminated.
The bank documented the issue internally and advised the parties that any future application involving Chloe would require independent verification.
Rebecca discussed additional options with Chloe regarding unauthorized account access.
Chloe chose to preserve the evidence and focus first on separating finances and housing.
She was not trying to punish Derek into poverty.
She was trying to stop being financially reachable by him.
Then Rebecca asked Chloe a painful question.
“Did you know he was struggling?”
“Not like this.”
“But did you know something wasn’t right?”
Chloe thought about all those dinner conversations Derek redirected.
The closed rooms.
The canceled honeymoon.
His insistence that she sell her condo before marriage even though she had initially planned to rent it out.
That one stayed with her.
“Maybe.”
“Why didn’t you push?”
Chloe looked down.
“Because I liked the life.”
Rebecca waited.
Chloe continued.
“I liked arriving at that house and feeling like I had made it into some world that wasn’t mine growing up.”
There was her own blind spot.
Brenda valued status openly.
Chloe had valued it more quietly.
The chandelier.
The wedding photos.
The Round Hill Road address.
She had ignored inconsistencies because asking harder questions might have damaged the picture before she got to live inside it.
That realization did not make Derek’s choices her fault.
It did make Chloe less interested in telling herself she had been fooled by a perfect performance.
She had participated in polishing parts of it.
That evening, she logged into the wedding photographer’s online gallery for the first time.
There were hundreds of photographs.
Derek kissing her beneath white roses.
Brenda fastening Chloe’s veil.
Champagne raised beneath the chandelier.
Chloe stopped at one image.
Derek and Brenda stood alone behind the reception tent.
Brenda’s hand rested on his arm.
Derek looked terrified.
The photograph had captured what Chloe had missed.
Not a groom overwhelmed with happiness.
A man approaching a deadline.
She closed the gallery.
May you like
She no longer needed the picture of her marriage to look beautiful.
She needed the truth of it to become survivable.
