Chapter 9 - The Family Learned What Daniel Had Done
News of the staircase incident spread through the Carter family before Daniel was ready.
His older brother in Chicago called.
An aunt from Boston.
Two cousins.
Most wanted a simple villain.
Vanessa fit easily.
Then Grace’s claim became known.
Daniel had assaulted her.
Suddenly the story became harder.
His brother asked the question no one else had.
“You kicked her?”
“Yes.”
“And slapped her?”
“Yes.”
“You could've seriously hurt her.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Because I was angry.”
“No. Why did you think anger gave you permission?”
Daniel did not know.
Not yet.
He began anger-management counseling before any court required it.
The counselor did not let him hide behind Vanessa’s manipulation.
“You were deceived,” she said. “You were also violent.”
Both could be true.
That distinction became central to everything that followed.
Grace’s attorney negotiated medical reimbursement and a substantial settlement related to Daniel’s assault and wrongful termination.
Daniel agreed without demanding confidentiality.
Grace specifically refused any clause preventing her from discussing what happened.
Daniel accepted that too.
Vanessa called it financial suicide.
He ignored her.
Meanwhile, the financial investigation deepened.
Bellweather Interiors produced invoices.
Several were inflated.
Natalie Bell claimed Vanessa had directed billing descriptions and told her Margaret had approved additional amounts as “family gifts.”
Margaret denied making gifts.
Her accountant found no gift records.
The investigation now involved possible financial exploitation in addition to the staircase incident.
Still, Vanessa’s attorney insisted the financial dispute proved nothing about intent on the stairs.
Technically, he was right.
Daniel had learned not to confuse suspicion with proof.
Then Grace remembered one sentence.
The morning of the incident, she had told Vanessa:
“If Mrs. Carter wants me to call Warren, I'm calling Warren.”
Vanessa had replied:
“You won’t be working here long enough.”
Grace had dismissed it as another threat to fire her.
Now it carried different weight.
The investigators documented it.
Not proof alone.
Another piece.
