Chapter 1 - The Two Fingers Pointing at His Wife

Daniel Carter’s shoe struck Grace Bennett hard enough to knock her backward across the polished foyer floor.
“Get out of my house! You’re fired!”
Grace landed on one hip, stunned.
Behind him, his sixty-seven-year-old mother sat trembling in her wheelchair at the bottom of the grand staircase.
Daniel had walked through the front door seconds earlier and seen only the ending.
His mother terrified.
Grace beside the wheelchair.
Vanessa racing down the stairs.
“She pushed your mother!”
Daniel believed his wife without hesitation.
Grace pushed herself upright.
“Daniel, please. I didn’t push her—I caught her! Vanessa did it!”
“Stop lying!”
His open palm struck Grace across the face.
The sound cracked through the mansion.
Grace stopped moving.
Tears filled her eyes.
Vanessa stood behind Daniel in her cream dress, breathing quickly, one hand pressed dramatically against her chest.
Then the hallway door flew open.
Seven-year-old Lisa ran into the foyer.
Daniel’s daughter could not speak, but panic needed no voice.
She grabbed Grace’s gray uniform and pulled her away from the front door.
“Lisa, honey—”
The little girl pointed at Vanessa.
Once.
Again.
Again.
Fast.
Desperate.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Sweetheart, you're confused.”
Lisa ignored her.
She pointed toward the staircase.
Then she thrust both hands forward violently, mimicking someone shoving something away.
Daniel stopped breathing.
“What are you showing me?”
Lisa pointed at Vanessa again.
Vanessa laughed too quickly.
“She saw Grace with the chair. That's all.”
Daniel turned toward Margaret.
His mother had been unable to speak since the stroke eleven months earlier.
But she understood everything around her.
Her right hand shook badly as she lifted it from the wheelchair armrest.
One finger extended.
Not toward Grace.
Toward Vanessa.
The foyer went silent.
Daniel looked at his wife.
Vanessa took one step backward.
For the first time since he had entered the house, Daniel noticed something he should have noticed immediately.
Grace had been standing below the staircase.
Vanessa had come running down from above it.

If Grace had pushed Margaret from the top—
why had Vanessa been upstairs?
