Chapter 14 - The Apology Grace Did Not Owe Him

Daniel met Grace almost a year after the incident at Margaret’s request.

Not in the mansion.

At a quiet café near Bruce Park.

Grace arrived wearing jeans and a navy sweater.

Without the gray uniform, Daniel was struck by how completely he had once confused her role with her identity.

“I wanted to say something once,” he told her.

Grace raised an eyebrow.

“Once?”

“One last time unless you bring it up.”

She nodded.

Daniel kept it simple.

“I’m sorry I kicked you. I’m sorry I slapped you. I’m sorry I fired you before asking what happened. Vanessa manipulated the situation, but she did not control my hands.”

Grace looked down at her coffee.

Daniel continued.

“You saved my mother. I punished you for it.”

For several seconds, Grace said nothing.

Then:

“I believe you're sorry.”

Relief rose too quickly.

She saw it.

“That isn't forgiveness.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“Good.”

She stirred her coffee.

“Because I still remember Lisa watching you hit me.”

Daniel swallowed.

“So do I.”

“That may be the part I never get over.”

“Fair.”

Grace studied him.

“You've changed.”

“I’m trying.”

“Those aren't always the same thing.”

“I know.”

A small smile touched her mouth.

“That answer is new.”

Before leaving, Grace told him Margaret wanted the family at the mansion for Thanksgiving.

Daniel’s first instinct was to ask whether Vanessa would be there.

He stopped himself.

“Did Mom invite her?”

“No.”

Daniel nodded.

That was enough.

Grace stood.

“Lisa wants me there.”

“She should.”

Grace hesitated.

“She wants you there too.”

That hurt in a different way.

Not absolution.

An invitation.

Daniel had finally learned not to confuse the two.
