Chapter 8 - THE LAST TIME EMILY LET SOMEONE ELSE EXPLAIN HEREmily requested copies of her earlier emergency and urgent-care records.

Then she created a timeline.

Not for court first.

For herself.

Date.

What Matthew did.

What injury resulted.

What explanation was given.

Who knew.

The columns became unbearable.

Jessica’s name appeared repeatedly.

After the sprained wrist.

After the rib injury.

After the concussion.

After the second police visit.

Jessica brought casseroles after assaults.

Jessica washed broken dishes.

Jessica told Emily which lie sounded most believable.

Bathroom.

Garage.

Cabinet.

Stress.

Then Emily remembered one sentence.

After the concussion, she had whispered, “I’m scared of him.”

Jessica answered:

Then stop making him feel cornered.

Emily closed the notebook.

That was the day she stopped trying to preserve any relationship with Jessica.

Her attorney sent formal notice that Jessica should not enter Emily’s apartment, workplace, or contact her directly.

Jessica called it cruelty.

Emily did not respond.

Matthew did.

Through counsel, he claimed his mother was being unfairly targeted for “supporting both spouses.”

Then financial records arrived.

There was no secret stolen fortune.

There was something more ordinary.

Matthew had been moving money from their joint checking into a separate savings account in his name whenever arguments became serious.

Not huge amounts.

$500.

$900.

$1,200.

Then often returning part later.

Emily recognized the timing.

“That was when he’d tell me we were broke.”

Before family trips.

Before she planned weekends with friends.

Before she considered leaving.

Financial control did not require draining an account completely.

Sometimes it required making the other person uncertain enough that independence felt irresponsible.

Jessica knew about the separate account.

She had helped Matthew open it.

That was documented in ordinary bank paperwork because she was listed as payable-on-death beneficiary when it was created years earlier.

Again, not a crime by itself.

But another connection.

Another way Jessica helped build systems around Matthew that excluded Emily.

Emily looked at me.

“She wasn’t covering for him after things happened.”

I knew what she meant.

May you like

“She was helping him build the conditions before.”

Exactly.
