Chapter 12 - THE FIRST TIME JESSICA DESCRIBED WHAT SHE ACTUALLY DIDJessica eventually agreed to speak with investigators again with counsel present.
Emily was not there.
Neither was I.
Harris later summarized what could appropriately be shared.
Jessica finally admitted she had sent at least one text from Emily’s phone.
She called it “preventing Arthur from escalating things.”
She admitted telling Emily that I wanted her to handle her marriage herself.
She said she believed that was “basically what I meant” when I agreed to give Emily space.
It wasn’t.
She admitted helping Matthew move money when he feared Emily might leave.
She called it protecting him from “financial panic.”
She admitted telling medical staff that Emily was clumsy.
She insisted Emily had sometimes used that explanation herself.
True.
After Jessica suggested it.
The most revealing answer came when Harris asked why she kicked Emily’s phone away the night I arrived.
Jessica said:
“Because she was going to turn one family fight into a police matter.”
Harris apparently paused.
Then asked:
“Wasn’t it already a police matter if your son assaulted her?”
Jessica had no answer.
That was the exact boundary she had never learned.
Violence inside family still belonged to the world where consequences existed.
Being related did not create a private legal system.
The confrontation did not transform Jessica.
She continued defending Matthew.
But her defenses became narrower.
She stopped saying nothing happened.
She began saying it should have been handled privately.
That shift mattered.
Matthew’s own position changed too.
At first he denied hitting Emily.
Then after photographs, medical records, and inconsistencies accumulated, his attorney acknowledged there had been “physical contact” during an argument.
Emily read the phrase and laughed bitterly.
“Physical contact.”
I asked whether she was okay.
“No.”
Then she put the document down.
“But I’m not going to spend my life arguing with euphemisms.”
That was the strongest thing I had heard her say.

Because it meant Matthew no longer controlled how much energy she gave his version.
