Chapter 10 - JESSICA HAD BEEN THE FIRST PERSON TO TEACH MATTHEW HOW TO HIDE ITThe biggest revelation did not come from a detective.
It came from Jessica.
Not intentionally.
She asked for a meeting with Emily.
Emily refused.
Then Jessica sent a six-page letter through Matthew’s attorney.
Most of it was exactly what we expected.
Matthew had flaws.
Emily provoked him.
Marriage required forgiveness.
I had always hated him.
Then paragraph four changed everything.
Jessica wrote:
I protected Matthew the same way I protected him from his father. When David lost his temper, I taught Matthew that what happens inside a family stays inside a family. I did what I knew how to do.
Emily read the sentence aloud to her therapist.
Then to her attorney.
Then once to me.
Jessica’s husband, David, had been violent.
Not once.
For years.
Matthew grew up watching his mother hide injuries, repair broken objects, and explain away shouting.
When Matthew was sixteen, David punched him.
Jessica told Matthew not to tell his school counselor because “your father could lose everything.”
When Matthew shoved Allison years later, Jessica applied the same rule.
Keep it private.
Protect the family.
Explain the man.
Question the woman.
Then Emily arrived.
Jessica had not merely been a mother unable to accept that her son was abusive.
She had trained herself over decades to interpret concealment as loyalty.
That explained why she was so practiced.
Why she knew how to answer doctors.
Why she knew which injuries could be called accidents.
Why she instinctively kicked Emily’s phone away.
Why she reached for mine.
Evidence was not neutral to Jessica.
Evidence was betrayal.
Then Emily noticed something even more painful.
The earlier fake distance between us had the same origin.
Jessica knew exactly what happened when outsiders became involved.
A teacher.
A counselor.
Police.
A father who had spent thirty-two years recognizing coercive behavior.
She did not isolate Emily because she hated me personally.
She isolated her because I was structurally dangerous to the family rule Jessica had lived by since her own marriage:
Nobody outside gets to know.
Matthew learned that rule from her.
Then weaponized it for himself.
Jessica’s history explained her.
It did not excuse her.
Emily said it best.
“She survived one abusive man and then taught another one how to survive consequences.”
