Chapter 5 - The Proof Diane Invented

Diane’s “proof” consisted of photographs.

Renee showed them to Natalie during the second home visit. One depicted Lena standing inside the front window after dark. Another showed Natalie’s driveway empty. A timestamp suggested Lena had been alone for forty-three minutes.

Natalie recognized the evening immediately.

She had walked two houses down to help an elderly neighbor whose kitchen pipe had burst. Lena remained with Claire, who had brought her sons over for dinner.

“Claire was inside,” Natalie said.

Renee nodded. “I’ll need her to confirm that.”

When Natalie called, Claire did not answer.

Hours passed.

Finally, Claire arrived in person, looking exhausted.

“Mom took that picture from across the street,” she admitted. “She told me it was because Lena looked sad.”

“Will you tell Renee you were here?”

Claire sat on the edge of Natalie’s couch. “If I do, Mom will know I chose you.”

“This is not a disagreement over Christmas dinner.”

“I know.”

“Lena thinks strangers are coming to take her bedroom away.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Natalie lowered her voice. “What has Mom promised you?”

The question made Claire cry.

Diane had been paying six hundred dollars a month toward Claire’s rent—or claiming she was. Claire believed the money came from a small account their father left for family emergencies. Diane warned that if Claire contradicted the report, the payments would stop.

Natalie opened the ledger on her laptop.

She turned it toward her sister.

Every monthly payment to Claire had come from Natalie’s bank account. Natalie transferred it to Diane because Diane insisted Claire would feel ashamed accepting money directly.

Claire stared at the screen.

“Mom said Dad arranged this.”

“Dad left twelve thousand dollars after funeral costs. That was gone the first year.”

The hidden truth was larger than a false CPS report.

For years, Diane had taken Natalie’s money, redistributed some of it, and presented herself as the family’s provider. She controlled gratitude, information, and loyalty without earning any of them.

Claire wiped her face.

“I’ll speak to Renee.”

“Tell her the truth. Not for me.”

Claire looked toward Lena’s bedroom.

“For her,” she said.

Before leaving, she paused at the door.

“There’s something else. Mom collected money from all of us for every reunion.”

Natalie looked back at the ledger filled with expenses she had paid in full.

“How much?”
