At her birthday toast, my mother pointed at my six-year-old adopted daughter and kicked her out: "You're not family." I didn't argue; I took Lena home. Two weeks later, after Mom filed a CPS report claiming my home was unsafe and Lena could be removed, I opened the support ledger that had paid for every reunion cabin. Mom went pale.

The final family meeting occurred at Evan’s house in Roswell.

No children attended.

Diane had requested the meeting before signing the repayment agreement. She said she wanted one last chance to explain herself without attorneys.

Natalie agreed only because Melissa had already reviewed the documents and Diane could no longer change the investigation’s outcome.

The support ledger lay open on Evan’s dining table.

Beside it were copies of relatives’ contributions and Diane’s proposed repayment schedule. Selling her luxury SUV and downsizing from her townhouse would cover part of the amount. The rest would be paid monthly over several years.

Diane entered, saw the papers, and looked offended.

“You’re really going to reduce our family to columns?”

Claire answered before Natalie could.

“No. The columns show how you reduced us to leverage.”

Diane turned toward Natalie.

“If you sign this, every mistake I made becomes permanent.”

“The report you filed became permanent the moment Lena asked whether I was sending her back.”

“I was angry.”

“You had eleven days to calm down.”

Diane sat slowly.

For several minutes, nobody spoke. The silence was not dramatic. It was exhausted.

Evan asked whether she would finally acknowledge that Lena was Natalie’s daughter.

Diane pressed her lips together.

“She is legally her daughter.”

Natalie closed the ledger.

That answer was enough.

Not enough for reconciliation.

Enough to stop waiting.

“I’m not asking you to love Lena,” Natalie said. “I’m making sure your refusal can’t reach her anymore.”

Diane signed the financial agreement. She signed the no-contact terms. She signed a correction stating that she had no firsthand evidence Natalie left Lena unsupervised or maintained an unsafe home.

She still would not sign an apology.

As Diane placed the pen down, she looked at Natalie.

“Will you ever let me see you again?”

Natalie did not answer for Lena or for the future.

“I won’t see you while you keep asking me to separate myself from my child.”

Diane left the house alone.
