Chapter 11 - The People Who Had Helped Diane Lie
Evan apologized first.
He did it badly.
He arrived with a new box of crayons for Lena and began explaining how difficult Diane’s life had been after their father died.
Natalie stopped him.
“You can feel sorry for Mom without asking Lena to absorb the consequences.”
Evan nodded, ashamed. He left the crayons and did not ask to see Lena.
Claire’s apology was different.
She gave Renee a complete statement, including Diane’s request for false corroboration. She accepted that the disclosure might end her relationship with their mother and complicate her own finances.
Natalie helped Claire apply for rental assistance but did not resume the old payments.
That boundary hurt both of them.
For years, Natalie had solved family problems with money because transfers were easier than conversations. By quietly paying, she had allowed Diane to control the story and kept her siblings from understanding their own dependence.
Her generosity had been real.
So had her avoidance.
Renee completed the child-welfare assessment and informed Natalie that removal was not being considered. The allegations of unsafe housing and inadequate supervision were unsupported.
The case would not disappear immediately. Documentation, supervisory review, and closure procedures still had to be completed.
Lena understood only that the visits had stopped.
“Does that mean I passed?” she asked.
Natalie sat beside her on the bedroom floor.
“You were never being tested.”
“It felt like a test.”
“I know.”
Lena opened the bracelet box Evan had returned. Inside was the silver bracelet she had bought for Diane, with a small tree charm attached.
“Can we return it?”
“Yes.”
“Can the money go in my college account?”
Natalie smiled despite the ache behind it. “Yes.”
They placed the receipt in Natalie’s purse.
That evening Melissa called.
Diane had retained an attorney and offered to repay part of the disputed reunion money if Natalie withdrew any allegation that the CPS report was retaliatory.
“She wants financial settlement in exchange for controlling the family story,” Melissa said.
