Chapter 8 - The Mistress Loses Her Script

Chloe broke first.
Not loudly at first.
It began with a laugh.
Small.
Sharp.
Ugly.
She stood in the airport conference room, arms crossed, staring at Ryan like she had just found mold inside a wedding cake.
“You told me she was nothing without you,” Chloe said.
Ryan’s face tightened.
“Not now.”
“No,” Chloe snapped. “Now is perfect.”
Claire watched them from across the table.
There is a strange kind of peace in seeing liars turn on each other. Not happiness. Not exactly. More like proof that the love they used to wound you was never love at all. It was an agreement between selfish people.
Chloe pointed at Ryan.
“He said Claire was exhausted. Distracted. Easy to pressure. He said once the emergency contract went through, nobody would question it because she was known for moving fast under pressure.”
Ryan’s voice dropped. “Chloe, stop talking.”
Detective Moreno said, “Please continue.”
Chloe looked at the detective, then at Claire.
Her eyes were bright with anger, not remorse.
“He said he deserved a piece of what Claire had. He said he spent years standing beside her while people congratulated her. He said if she could build a career out of being cold, he could build one out of being smart.”
Claire’s stomach turned.
Ryan looked at the table.
Chloe gave a bitter smile.
“And he said after the divorce, his mother would help make Claire look unstable if she fought too hard.”
That sentence settled over the room like dust after demolition.
Claire did not move.
She had expected greed.
She had expected betrayal.
But hearing that Ryan and his family had planned to question her stability brought a different kind of pain.
Because that word had been waiting for her for months.
Insecure.
Cold.
Controlling.
Unstable.
Labels men use when evidence starts gathering.
Dana’s face hardened.
Detective Moreno looked at Ryan.
“Is that true?”
Ryan said nothing.
Chloe sat down again, breathing fast.
Then she turned on Claire.
“Don’t look so righteous. You neglected him.”
Claire looked at her calmly.
“No. I stopped mothering him.”
Chloe flinched.
Ryan finally spoke.
“You think you’re innocent in this marriage?”
“No,” Claire said. “I think I’m done accepting blame for your choices.”
Officer Martinez stepped in with a clear plastic evidence bag. Inside was a printed contract packet recovered from Chloe’s carry-on, along with a thumb drive labeled DENV HOSP ROUTING.
Chloe’s face changed again.
Detective Moreno took the bag.
“Ms. Reed, we’re going to need you to come with us.”
Chloe stood.
“Am I being arrested?”
“For now, you’re being detained for questioning related to corporate fraud, unlawful possession of proprietary documents, and conspiracy.”
Chloe looked at Ryan one last time.
He did not reach for her.
Claire noticed that.
On the plane, he had held her hand like she was precious.
In the room, when consequences arrived, he let her stand alone.
Chloe noticed too.
Her mouth trembled with rage.
“You coward,” she whispered.
The detectives escorted her out.
Ryan remained seated, staring at nothing.
Claire waited until the door closed.
Then she said, “That was the woman who made you feel warm?”
He looked up slowly.
His face was wrecked.
“Claire, I made mistakes.”
“No,” she said. “Mistakes are wrong turns. This was architecture.”
He closed his eyes.
For the first time all day, he looked almost human.
May you like
That did not make him safer.
It only made him smaller.
