Chapter 4 - Denver Was Waiting

When Flight 405 landed in Denver, Ryan stood too quickly.
The seat belt sign had barely turned off.
Chloe grabbed her purse, her cream coat clutched against her chest like armor. She did not look at Claire. That told Claire plenty. Women who are only caught in romance look ashamed or defiant. Chloe looked calculating.
A gate agent stepped onto the plane before passengers began moving.
Beside her were two airport police officers and a woman in a dark gray suit.
Claire recognized the woman immediately.
Dana Whitfield, general counsel for Morgan Construction.
Ryan saw her and went still.
“Claire,” he said under his breath, “what did you do?”
Claire stood from row fourteen and lifted her carry-on from the overhead bin.
“I made sure we had a welcome committee.”
Passengers began murmuring.
The gate agent spoke professionally.
“Mr. Morgan, Ms. Reed, Ms. Claire Morgan, please remain on board until the other passengers have deplaned.”
Ryan’s jaw tightened. “For what reason?”
Dana stepped closer from the aircraft door.
“Corporate security matter.”
Ryan forced a laugh.
“I don’t work for Morgan Construction.”
“No,” Dana said. “But your credentials accessed our protected project files last week.”
Chloe looked at Ryan.
Ryan looked at Claire.
Claire said nothing.
That silence was becoming useful.
When the plane emptied, the officers escorted the three of them into a private airport conference room near the gate. It had beige walls, a long table, and a coffee machine that smelled burnt. Not dramatic. Not glamorous. Just the kind of room where polished lies go to die under fluorescent lights.
Ryan immediately started pacing.
“This is insane,” he said. “You can’t detain us.”
Airport police officer Martinez remained near the door.
“Nobody said detained. You were asked to speak voluntarily.”
“Then I’m leaving.”
Dana placed a folder on the table.
“You can. But if you walk out, we proceed without your statement.”
Ryan stopped.
Chloe sat down slowly, crossing her legs.
“Claire,” she said, voice soft, “this is obviously emotional for you.”
Claire laughed once.
Not loudly.
Not kindly.
“Don’t try that voice on me.”
Chloe’s face tightened.
Dana opened the folder.
“At 2:14 a.m. last Thursday, Morgan Construction’s Denver hospital project files were accessed using a credential token associated with Ryan Morgan’s spouse guest account from a NorthBridge Freight device.”
Ryan said, “That could be a system error.”
“At 2:19 a.m.,” Dana continued, “a subcontractor replacement packet was generated naming NorthBridge Freight as emergency logistics provider. At 2:22 a.m., the system attached Claire Morgan’s digital authorization.”
Claire looked at Ryan.
His eyes flicked away.
Dana turned a page.
“At 2:31 a.m., the packet was forwarded to an email address registered to Chloe Reed.”
Chloe’s mouth parted.
“That’s not illegal. Ryan sends me work documents all the time.”
Dana smiled faintly.
“From his employer, perhaps. These were not his employer’s documents.”
Ryan snapped, “Claire, say something.”
Claire looked at him.
“You told me you were going to Portland.”
“This isn’t about that.”
“No,” she said. “It’s about you being arrogant enough to cheat and steal on the same itinerary.”
Officer Martinez looked down to hide a smile.
Ryan’s face burned red.
Dana slid another paper forward.
“Alpine Meridian Supply, the company that created the Denver emergency, is connected to Reed Family Holdings.”
Claire looked at Chloe.
Chloe blinked too slowly.
Dana continued.
“Chloe Reed’s father sits on its board.”
Ryan went very still.
That was the moment Claire realized something.
Ryan knew plenty.
But he did not know everything.
Chloe looked at Dana, then at Ryan.
“Don’t,” she said sharply.
Ryan stared at her.
“Your father owns Alpine?”
Chloe’s silence answered.
Claire leaned back in her chair.

The affair had two liars.
But only one of them had been lying to both sides.
