Chapter 5 - The Contract With Her Name on It

The emergency contract was thirteen pages long.

Claire read it once.

Then again.

Her name appeared on page two, page seven, and page twelve.

Claire Morgan, Operations Director.

Digital approval attached.

Emergency procurement authorization.

Vendor substitution due to supplier failure.

It was almost convincing.

Almost.

The person who forged it knew her job title, her approval language, even the way she shortened “materials compliance” to “mat comp” in internal notes. But they missed one thing.

Claire never approved emergency vendor swaps without a handwritten field code from the site superintendent.

It was an old habit from her first year in construction, after a subcontractor tried to blame her for a missing shipment. Every major approval got a field code. Not because the system required it. Because Claire did.

This contract had none.

Dana tapped that blank section with her pen.

“Whoever generated this didn’t know your field code practice.”

Ryan looked trapped.

Chloe looked annoyed.

That difference mattered.

Claire turned to her husband.

“You borrowed my laptop two weeks ago.”

He swallowed.

“Because mine wouldn’t print.”

“You asked me to log in.”

“You were standing right there.”

“And then you told me the kitchen sink was leaking.”

His face changed.

Claire nodded slowly.

“You kept the session open.”

Chloe shifted in her chair.

Dana looked at Chloe. “Would you like to explain how that session connected to your email?”

Chloe’s soft mask slipped.

“I don’t have to explain anything to you.”

“No,” Dana said. “You can explain it to the detectives when they arrive.”

Ryan’s head snapped up.

“Detectives?”

Dana closed the folder.

“This is no longer just internal.”

Ryan turned to Claire.

“Are you really going to do that? After six years?”

Claire felt the room tilt slightly around the number.

Six years.

Six years of holidays, mortgages, shared Netflix passwords, grocery lists, his mother’s birthday dinners, Sunday mornings when he kissed her shoulder before making coffee.

Six years did not vanish because he betrayed her.

That was the cruelty of it.

Love leaves witnesses inside the body.

But betrayal can outvote them.

“After six years,” Claire said, “you used my name on a fraudulent contract.”

Ryan’s eyes hardened.

“You care more about your job than your marriage.”

There it was again.

The old insult in a new suit.

Claire leaned forward.

“No. I cared about this marriage enough to ignore my instincts until you dragged my career into your affair.”

Chloe gave a bitter laugh.

“Your career. That’s always what this was about, isn’t it? Ryan said you made him feel like an assistant in his own life.”

Claire turned to her.

“Funny. You are an assistant.”

Chloe’s face went red.

Ryan snapped, “Don’t talk to her like that.”

The words landed like a door closing.

Claire looked at him.

There he was.

Protecting Chloe in front of the wife he had just wounded.

No shame.

Only loyalty to the woman who made him feel taller.

Dana’s phone buzzed. She checked it, then looked at Claire.

“The Denver office is ready. Board wants a live call at noon. NorthBridge’s VP of compliance is joining.”

Ryan stiffened.

“My employer?”

“Yes,” Dana said. “Your employer.”

Ryan’s confidence cracked.

“No. Claire, listen to me. This is being exaggerated. NorthBridge can’t think I—”

“Stole project documents?” Claire asked. “Forged my authorization? Colluded with your secretary and her father’s supplier company?”

Chloe stood abruptly.

“I’m not staying for this.”

Officer Martinez moved one step.

“Ma’am, you’re free to leave, but your suitcase is being held under the airline’s fraud-related security report until officers finish reviewing the complaint.”

Chloe stared at him.

“My luggage?”

Claire remembered Ryan helping her lift that suitcase.

So careful.

So tender.

Dana looked at Chloe.

“Was the signed contract packet in the front pocket or the laptop sleeve?”

Chloe’s face went pale.

Ryan whispered, “Chloe?”

Claire sat perfectly still.

The airport conference room went quiet.

Then Officer Martinez opened the door.

Two detectives stepped inside.
