Chapter 12 - WHAT CALEB WAS REALLY AFRAID OF

Caleb finally asked to speak to Rachel.

She refused at first.

Then agreed on one condition.

Sarah and Agent Heller would be present.

They met in a county interview room.

Caleb looked smaller without his work jacket.

Rachel sat across from him.

“Why did you leave Harper alone?”

He stared down.

“I thought Elias would come back.”

“For four days?”

“No.”

“Then when did you stop believing that?”

Caleb’s eyes filled.

“The next morning.”

Rachel leaned forward.

“Why?”

“Because Cole called me.”

Sarah watched him carefully.

“What did Mercer say?”

Caleb looked at Heller.

“He said Elias had taken off.”

“That’s all?”

“No.”

Caleb swallowed.

“He said, ‘Your brother isn’t coming home tonight. Handle the kid.’”

Rachel closed her eyes.

“And you did nothing.”

“I went to the house.”

“You left her there.”

“I thought Dad would tell you.”

George thought Caleb had told Rachel.

Caleb thought George would.

Everyone had found someone else to carry the moral responsibility.

Harper had carried the practical result.

Four days alone.

“What were you actually protecting?” Rachel asked.

“The company?”

Caleb shook his head.

“At first.”

“Then what?”

“My son.”

Rachel stared at him.

Caleb continued.

“Cole said if I talked, he’d say I was the one paying him. That Elias had records with my name. I could go to prison.”

“You should have thought about that before paying him.”

“I know.”

“No, Caleb. What were you protecting after Elias vanished?”

Caleb broke.

“My kid thinking I was a criminal.”

Rachel’s face twisted.

“So you let Elias’s kid think her father abandoned her.”

The sentence emptied the room.

Caleb covered his face.

No one rescued him from it.

Then he revealed one final detail.

The night at the quarry, before Elias ran, Mercer demanded the storage card.

Caleb told him about Harper’s backpack.

But Elias laughed.

“He told Cole, ‘You’re too late.’”

Sarah leaned forward.

“What did he mean?”

“I don’t know.”

“Think.”

Caleb shook his head.

Then stopped.

“There was a library.”

“What?”

“Elias used the public library computers sometimes. Said they were safer than our office.”

Agent Heller immediately began making notes.

The missing storage card might never have been the only copy.

And Mercer’s desperate search of Harper’s house may have been based on a lie Elias deliberately told to keep attention away from where the real evidence had already gone.
