Chapter 11 - THE SEARCH BELOW THE QUARRY

Search teams expanded into the wooded drainage corridor east of the quarry.
Dogs.
State police.
Volunteer search-and-rescue teams.
No one promised Rachel anything.
Harper remained with her and started school remotely because reporters had discovered the family connection.
Caleb was charged with evidence tampering related to moving Elias’s truck.
George faced the same investigation but cooperated.
Mercer still had not been charged with causing Elias’s disappearance.
That distinction infuriated half the town.
It also mattered.
Sarah had learned what happened when people decided feelings were evidence.
She refused to repeat the mistake, even with a man she despised.
Then investigators found Elias’s phone.
It was wedged beneath leaves nearly half a mile from the quarry.
Water damaged.
Screen shattered.
But forensic technicians recovered portions of its location data.
Elias had continued moving after leaving the confrontation.
For thirty-seven minutes.
Almost two miles.
Then the phone stopped near an access road.
Mercer’s cruiser fleet log placed him on that same road thirteen minutes later.
His cruiser remained there for nine minutes.
Then moved west.
Agent Heller showed Sarah the timeline.
“This is the closest we’ve come.”
“To what?”
“Putting Mercer with Elias after everyone else left.”
Still not proof of murder.
Still not proof Elias entered the cruiser.
But enough to tighten the question.
The damage from Part 10 spread through the Thorne family.
Rachel refused to speak to her father.
Harper learned that Grandpa George had been at the place where her father disappeared.
She cried for an hour.
George wrote her a letter.
Rachel did not give it to her.
Not yet.
Caleb’s wife moved temporarily to her sister’s house with their son.
The towing company shut down most operations after insurers suspended coverage.
Eighteen employees were laid off.
For Sarah, that mattered too.
Consequences were spreading to people who had never taken an envelope from Mercer or moved Elias’s truck.
Corruption was not a movie villain falling alone.
It was a roof collapsing across everyone standing underneath it.
Then Agent Heller received the forensic report from Elias’s phone.
A draft text had survived.
Unsent.
It was addressed to Rachel.
Cole followed me. If Harper—
Nothing after that.
The truth was getting closer.
May you like
But it still could not tell them whether Elias had escaped Mercer that night.
Or whether the road was where he stopped running.
