Chapter 10 - ELIAS WAS NOT THE MAN THEY WERE HIDING
The flatbed driver was George Thorne.
Caleb and Elias’s seventy-one-year-old father.
The founder of Thorne Recovery.
The man everyone had described as retired.
When Agent Heller confronted him with the truck number, George asked for a lawyer.
Then, twelve hours later, he asked to speak.
The major twist changed the entire shape of the case.
Mercer had not summoned George.
Caleb had.
At 12:19 a.m., during the quarry argument, Caleb called his father and said Elias was about to destroy the company.
George arrived believing he could calm his sons down.
Instead, he walked into a confrontation already out of control.
Elias had a small digital storage card containing copied towing records and photographs of handwritten payment ledgers.
The item Harper remembered being placed in her school backpack.
Elias told Mercer copies would reach state investigators if anything happened to him.
Mercer laughed.
Then Caleb told him there was no copy.
Because Caleb had watched Elias prepare the material.
That was the first betrayal.
The second was worse.
Caleb told Mercer the original was probably in Harper’s backpack.
Sarah finally understood why Mercer returned to the house Wednesday morning.
Not to check on Harper.
To search for evidence.
But George revealed something nobody expected.
Elias had not been killed at the quarry.
At least not while George was there.
The argument became physical after Mercer tried to take Elias’s phone. Elias shoved him. Mercer struck Elias once, knocking him onto the gravel.
Elias’s glasses broke.
Caleb stepped between them.
George demanded everyone stop.
And Elias ran.
Not toward his truck.
Down the wooded drainage trail leading away from the quarry.
“He was alive,” George said.
Agent Heller leaned forward.
“You’re certain?”
“He was yelling at us.”
“Then why did you move his pickup?”
George began crying.
“Cole said if we left it there, everybody would know something happened.”
“So you helped move it.”
“Yes.”
“Who drove it?”
“Caleb.”
Caleb had not merely watched.
He drove his brother’s truck away while George followed in the flatbed.
Mercer remained behind.
That reinterpreted everything.
Caleb’s inconsistent timeline.
The moved truck.
Mercer’s unexplained fiber inside it.
George’s truck on the footage.
Even Harper’s abandonment.
Caleb returned to the Thorne house before dawn, discovered Harper sleeping, and told himself Elias would come back.
He did not call Rachel because admitting Elias was missing meant admitting what they had done.
He did not call police because Mercer was the police officer they needed to fear.
And Mercer entered the next morning looking for the storage card.
Sarah listened as Agent Heller explained the new timeline.
“One question remains.”
Sarah already knew.
“If Elias ran away alive…”
