Chapter 6 - WHAT THEIR SON FINALLY HEARD

Jake arrived the next evening carrying takeout from a barbecue place Michael liked. No one opened the containers.

Susan sat at one end of the dining table. Michael sat at the other. The distance between them looked smaller than the eighteen years it represented.

Jake remained standing.

“Tell me about Samuel.”

Michael’s eyes moved toward Susan, searching for permission or rescue. She gave him neither.

He began with the emergency room, the positive pregnancy test, and the doctor’s warning that Susan might die. His voice cracked when he described the procedure.

Then he tried to soften what followed.

“I thought your mother needed time.”

“You were advised to tell her before discharge,” Susan said.

Michael looked down.

“Yes.”

“And the signature?” Jake asked.

“I signed her name. I told myself it was temporary. That I’d explain once she was stronger.”

“When was that supposed to happen?”

Michael’s thumb rubbed the edge of the hospital bracelet.

“I don’t know.”

Jake pushed the untouched food toward the center of the table.

“You let me spend half my life thinking Mom destroyed this family by herself.”

“She did hurt us.”

“So did you.”

Michael flinched.

Susan did not protect him from the sentence. That had been her greatest flaw during the affair and afterward—confusing silence with mercy, then calling endurance accountability.

Michael admitted he had withheld the pathology report. He admitted he visited the cemetery alone because sharing Samuel would have required admitting that his punishment was built on grief, fear, and control.

“I wanted her to feel what I felt,” he said.

Susan’s voice remained steady.

“And did it help?”

Michael looked at the empty chair between them.

“No.”

The hospital compliance officer had scheduled a formal interview for Monday. Susan had already authorized the release of her archived records to an attorney. Michael could cooperate or force investigators to reconstruct the events without him.

He picked up the forged form.

“I’ll tell them everything.”

Jake sat down at last, but not beside his father.

“Start with why you ignored the psychiatrist.”

Michael closed his eyes.

Then he began again, without excuses.
