Chapter 4 - THE NAME ON THE STONE

The cemetery office smelled of carpet cleaner and old paper.

Susan showed the manager the recurring charge. The woman searched the computer, then asked Susan to confirm her address.

“The account is for a private infant marker in the Garden of Angels,” she said. “Mr. Miller has maintained it since 2008.”

Susan had to steady herself against the counter.

The marker sat beneath a young maple tree near the eastern fence. It was no larger than a hardcover book.

SAMUEL MICHAEL MILLER

OCTOBER 18, 2008

LOVED BEFORE WE KNEW HIM

Michael had named him.

He had chosen a burial plot, ordered a marker, and visited every year while Susan stayed home believing his silence was the measured sentence of an injured husband.

Jake stood several feet away, giving her privacy.

Susan crouched and ran her fingers over the engraved letters.

A groundskeeper approached with a plastic watering jug. He recognized the family name on the account but did not know Susan.

“Mr. Miller usually brings yellow mums,” he said. “Sometimes he sits for an hour. Never says much.”

“Does he come alone?”

The man nodded. “Always.”

Inside the cemetery file, Susan found one more detail. Michael had listed both himself and Susan as the child’s parents.

Not “possible father.”

Not “mother’s husband.”

Father.

At home that evening, Susan unlocked the cedar cabinet Michael had kept since his own father died. She expected financial records or old family photographs.

Instead, she found a hospital memory box.

Inside were two knitted caps, a card bearing Samuel’s footprints, and dozens of letters Michael had written but never mailed.

Most were addressed to the baby.

One was addressed to Susan.

I don’t know how to tell you that the child may have been mine. I don’t know whether I’m more afraid you’ll die from hearing it or live by turning him into proof that I forgave you.

The letter was dated two days after the surgery.

Beneath it lay a calendar from 2008. Michael had circled one night in July—the only night, after the affair ended, when Susan had entered his bedroom and he had allowed her to stay.

The dates fit.

Michael had known that all along.
