Chapter 12 - THE APOLOGY AT A TABLE WITH NO TURKEY

Marcus asked to speak to me eight months after Thanksgiving.

Rebecca advised a mediated setting.

I agreed.

No Mom.

That was important.

I wanted to know whether I could sit across from him without borrowing Eleanor’s strength.

Marcus looked different.

Less polished.

No expensive coat.

No wedding ring.

He began:

“I’m sorry.”

I said nothing.

“For the terminal.”

Nothing.

“For taking your key.”

Nothing.

“For shoving you.”

Better.

“For planning Danielle’s move before I told you the marriage was over.”

Better.

Then:

“For making you think everything was your fault whenever you saw something I didn't want you to see.”

That was the first sentence that reached me.

I asked:

“Why the bus terminal?”

He looked ashamed.

“I wanted you to feel abandoned.”

No excuse.

No minimizing.

“Why?”

“So you'd agree quickly.”

“To the divorce?”

“To everything.”

“The house?”

“Yes.”

“Money?”

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“And because I was angry you wouldn't disappear the way I had already told everyone you would.”

There it was.

Control.

Not passion.

Not loss of temper.

Narrative management.

Then I asked about Danielle.

“Did you love her?”

Marcus took a long time.

“I thought I did.”

“That's not an answer.”

“Yes.”

Fine.

“Did you love me?”

“Yes.”

That hurt more.

“You know those answers can both be true?”

“I do now.”

I nodded.

Then:

“You said I cared too much about being good.”

His face changed.

“You saw that?”

“Yes.”

He looked down.

“I knew you would rather lose money than look vindictive.”

“Yes.”

“I used it.”

“Yes.”

He started crying.

Not dramatically.

I watched.

Then he asked:

“Can you ever forgive me?”

“No.”

His eyes lifted.

“Never?”

“I didn't say never.”

He nodded.

“But you're not entitled to a forecast.”

That came from Mom.

Probably.

Still good.

We ended the meeting.

No hug.

No reconciliation.

May you like

No dramatic exit.

Just two people finally describing what one of them had done without arguing about whether it happened.
