Chapter 10 - THE THANKSGIVING PLAN HAD STARTED WITH MY MOTHER

The major twist came from Marcus’s own messages with Danielle.

He had not originally planned to leave me at the bus terminal.

He planned to send me to Mom’s house voluntarily.

Three weeks before Thanksgiving:

M: Chloe always runs to Eleanor when things get serious.

D: Then tell her it’s over.

M: Need her out of Arlington first. Once she’s with her mother, easier to frame it as separation.

Later:

D: Is Eleanor going to fight you?

M: She’s retired. She’ll tell Chloe to lawyer up, but Chloe hates conflict.

Then:

M: Thanksgiving is perfect. Family already expects her gone.

I stared at the screen.

Family already expects her gone.

Marcus had told people we were separating before telling me.

His sister.

Two friends.

Danielle.

Even his mother.

He created social reality first.

Then planned to make me conform to it.

Three clues changed meaning.

The suitcase.

He packed much of it himself while telling me we were staying overnight elsewhere.

The missing shoe.

It came off when I resisted getting out of the car because I realized we were at a bus station.

The house key.

Marcus did not simply take it in anger.

He removed it from my key ring before leaving Arlington.

Preparation.

Then the most disturbing line:

If Eleanor gets involved too early, Chloe will grow a spine.

I stopped reading.

Mom sat beside me.

She looked at the message.

No triumph.

Only sadness.

Marcus had not feared her legal power.

He feared what she did to my perception.

Around him, I questioned myself.

Around Mom, I remembered facts.

That was the real credential.

Not the federal seal.

A person who knew me before Marcus taught me to doubt my own judgment.

Then another message:

D: You talk about Chloe like she's weak. Why marry her?

Marcus:

She's not weak. She just cares too much about being good.

I cried when I read that.

Because he understood me.

He simply used the understanding differently than someone who loved me should.

That was the major twist.

Marcus never believed I was powerless.

He believed I could be controlled through conscience.

He knew I would worry about embarrassing family.

Ruining Thanksgiving.

Hurting his mother.

Being called vindictive.

Being the wife who “took the house.”

His plan depended on me remaining compassionate toward everybody except myself.

Bay 6 failed because Mom arrived before shame finished its work.
