Chapter 14 - TERESA RETURNED THE LAST THING SHE THOUGHT WAS HERSFrederick was almost two when Teresa asked to come over.

She had not been inside the house for eleven months.

We had seen her elsewhere.

Restaurants.

Parks.

Jennifer’s home.

Always short.

Always planned.

She had never been alone with Frederick again.

Not because we believed she would physically harm him.

Because trust around boundaries had to be rebuilt before privilege returned.

She stood on the porch carrying a small wooden box.

Amy opened the door beside me.

“What’s that?”

Teresa held it out.

“Your father’s papers.”

Inside were:

Old Bradley Construction photographs.

Dad’s drafting pencil.

The first business license.

A brass key ring.

And an original copy of our promissory note.

The $90,000 loan.

Stamped:

PAID IN FULL.

I looked at Mom.

“The accountant already sent us confirmation.”

“I know.”

“Then why bring this?”

Her eyes filled.

“Because I kept the original in my safe.”

Amy understood before I did.

Teresa continued:

“I think part of me liked having something that proved this house still connected back to me.”

There it was.

Paper as emotional ownership.

She handed the note to Amy.

Not me.

Amy took it.

“Thank you.”

Mom nodded.

Then Frederick appeared behind us, dragging a plastic truck.

“Gamma!”

Teresa’s face changed completely.

Amy glanced at me.

Then stepped aside.

“You can come in for cake.”

Mom froze.

“Really?”

Amy smiled faintly.

“Cake.”

Not:

Everything is forgiven.

Not:

Here is your key.

One hour.

Birthday cake left over from a family lunch.

Teresa entered.

She took off her shoes without being asked.

Small thing.

Huge in context.

Before leaving, she stopped near the dining table.

The same table where she kicked the chair.

No one mentioned it.

She simply said:

“I behaved terribly here.”

Amy looked at her.

“Yes.”

Mom swallowed.

Then nodded.

No defense.

May you like

She left.

That was enough for one visit.
