Chapter 12 - WHAT EVERYONE WAS PROTECTINGThe family meeting happened four months later.

Not at our house.

A therapist’s conference room.

Teresa.

Me.

Amy.

Jennifer.

No Frederick.

He stayed with Amy’s sister.

The therapist asked:

“What were you protecting?”

Mom answered first.

“The family.”

Of course.

The therapist waited.

Teresa sighed.

“Bradley.”

Closer.

“What does Bradley mean?”

Mom looked at me.

“Everything your father and I built.”

“And Amy?”

Teresa’s eyes shifted.

“She is family.”

Amy almost laughed.

The therapist asked:

“Was she treated like family at Frederick’s party?”

Silence.

Then Teresa said:

“No.”

No excuse.

That mattered.

“What were you protecting in that moment?”

Mom’s eyes filled.

“My place.”

There.

“If Connor didn’t need my help anymore, I didn’t know what I was supposed to be.”

Amy looked at her.

For months, I had wanted that sentence.

When it arrived, it made me sad instead of victorious.

Then my turn.

“What were you protecting, Connor?”

“Convenience.”

I answered immediately.

The therapist looked surprised.

“I let Mom manage things because she was good at it.”

I looked at Amy.

“And every time Amy objected, I treated the conflict like extra work.”

My throat tightened.

“So I explained Mom instead of stopping her.”

Amy’s eyes filled.

That was mine.

Then Amy.

“What were you protecting?”

“My marriage.”

She laughed weakly.

“I kept thinking if I made things easier for Connor, his mother would eventually stop seeing me as competition.”

Teresa looked down.

“And Frederick?”

Amy swallowed.

“My idea of what a good mother looks like.”

She wiped her eyes.

“I let Teresa make me ashamed of being tired.”

Then Jennifer.

“Peace.”

Same answer families always use.

“I saw Mom being awful and thought Connor would deal with it.”

I looked at her.

“I wasn’t there.”

“I know.”

She nodded.

“That’s the point.”

Everybody waited for the strongest person.

Then assumed not acting was neutral.

It wasn’t.

The therapist asked Teresa the final question.

“Why did you tell Amy that Frederick could stay with the Bradleys if she left Connor?”

Mom’s face changed.

“I was angry.”

“Was it true?”

“No.”

“Did you know it was false?”

“Yes.”

Clean.

Finally.

“I wanted to scare her.”

Amy inhaled sharply.

Teresa started crying.

“I am sorry.”

Amy didn’t answer.

She wasn’t required to.
