Chapter 8 - THE DECISION ETHAN MADE ABOUT HIS WEDDING
The marriage lasted nine days before Ethan moved into a hotel.
Not because I demanded it.
Vanessa had not committed adultery.
Had not stolen money.
Their wedding was legally valid.
He simply could not remain in the same house while trying to understand what she had done to Mia.
Vanessa called that emotional abuse.
“You married me and abandoned me because your ex-wife slapped me.”
Ethan replied:
“This is not about Claire.”
For once, correct.
Vanessa tried another version.
“Mia hates me because Claire trained her to.”
That ended badly.
Ethan told her:
“Do not blame my daughter for what I watched you do.”
The wedding photographer provided another clue.
Vanessa had requested two separate album concepts.
One called:
Full Family
Another:
Whitmore-Bennett New Beginning
Ethan was not a Whitmore.
Vanessa had apparently used her family name for a branding concept.
The New Beginning album contained no Mia.
When the photographer asked whether that was intentional, Vanessa wrote:
Yes. We want one clean set representing the marriage itself without prior-family complications.
Prior-family complications.
A five-year-old child.
That email became emotionally definitive for Ethan.
He requested counseling.
Not reconciliation first.
Fact-finding.
Vanessa agreed.
I stayed out of their marriage.
My focus was Mia.
We restored her room.
Unpacked every box.
Then Ethan asked her:
“Do you want to come back here?”
She looked at Vanessa’s closed closet door.
“No.”
He nodded.
“Okay.”
No pressure.
For three months, Ethan saw Mia outside the house.
My place.
Parks.
His temporary apartment.
His parents’ house.

He did not make Mia prove she loved him by returning to the place where she had been hidden.
That was one of the first things he did right after months of missing the signs.
