Chapter 1 - THE FLOWER CROWN UNDER THE TABLE

Vanessa ripped the flower crown off my five-year-old daughter’s head and threw it beneath the wedding table because Mia “didn’t match the pictures.”
I saw the crown first.
Crushed against the ballroom carpet.
Then I heard crying beneath the tablecloth.
I lifted it.
Mia was curled against one of the table legs in her pale-lilac flower-girl dress, strawberry-blonde braids half undone, mascara from some well-meaning bridesmaid streaked beneath her eyes.
“Mia?”
She lunged into my arms.
“Mommy.”
I picked her up.
“What happened?”
She pressed her wet face into my shoulder.
Then whispered:
“She said Daddy wanted a prettier daughter.”
I stopped breathing.
Not:
Vanessa doesn’t like my dress.
Not:
She yelled at me.
Daddy wanted a prettier daughter.
I carried Mia across the ballroom.
Vanessa saw us coming and did not look remotely ashamed.
She stood beside the wedding display in her fitted ivory gown, champagne in one hand.
“Relax,” she said. “I only hid what didn’t match.”
People nearby heard her.
Nobody laughed.
That almost made it worse.
They stared.
Some looked down.
Some pretended suddenly to be interested in their drinks.
On the display beside Vanessa sat a framed photograph of Ethan with Mia.
Except it had been cut in half.
Ethan remained in the frame.
My daughter’s missing half lay facedown beside her discarded flower crown.
Vanessa saw me notice it.
Then she smiled.
Tiny.
Satisfied.
That smile told me this was not a bride overwhelmed by a stressful wedding day.
She had done this deliberately.
I shifted Mia securely against my hip.
Then slapped Vanessa once across the face.
Hard.
The ballroom went silent.
Vanessa stumbled sideways.
And behind her, Ethan appeared.
My ex-husband.
Mia’s father.
Still wearing his black tuxedo.
He looked from Vanessa’s face to me.
Then to Mia crying in my arms.
Finally to the mutilated photograph.
He picked it up.
“What the hell is this?”
I looked straight at Vanessa.
“Tell him why his daughter thinks he replaced her.”
Vanessa’s face drained.
Ethan turned toward his new wife.
And suddenly the wedding was no longer the biggest problem in that ballroom.
May you like
Because Mia had just revealed something I should have understood months earlier.
This was not the first time Vanessa had tried to convince my daughter she no longer belonged with her father.
